Hey guys, I'm sure there's already a tread on this but I couldn't find it. I just bought a 92 mtx. The a/c doesn't work and it's bleeping hot outside! I was thinking of recharging the a/c but then read somewhere that high revs will ruin your a/c...

If this is the case what do I have to do to fix it? I only paid $1500 for this car and it's got 130,000 miles on it. It's a baby. I had it checked before purchase and was told that it was taken extremely good care of. I just don't know squat about a/c systems. Can anyone give me an idea where to start?

Thanks
Ken

An A/C recharge may be all it needs, You can go to your local part store or wal-mart and pick up the kit. I *THINK* if I remember correctly, your year should have the new style refrigerant....R134a? I'm not sure, make sure you get the correct kind. The kit will come with an adapter to mate the can to the connector on the firewall (behind the black trim piece), a valve, and a gauge that goes on the hose to measure the psi of the system. Any reputable partshop should be able to help you out on what you need to do. I have refilled my SHO and my girlfriend's Saturn. They leak when they are inactive for an amount of time, the oil in the gas settles and the seals dry out. If you have not been running the AC at all or at least on "Auto" with it set at around 69-72 durring the winter or w/e it will run out of refrigerant.

A simple recharge should do just fine, if not then your compressor may be shot.

A few pointers.

Have the car running.

FIND OUT WHAT KIND YOU NEED AND GET THE CORRECT REFRIGERANT!!!

Follow all directions given from a GOOD source.

Freeon replaces Oxygen, DON'T get caught in a cloud of it or breathe it, can cause skin irritations* It's under pressure so it's cold, it will cause frostbite (just like the duster cans :) )

Cycle the A/C multiple times from MAX to compleatly OFF

Don't rev higher than around 2500-3000rpm or whatever feels comfertable while cycling the system.

When cycling the system, the pressure will drop and may require more freeon to be put in. The directions will indicate how much pressure the system requires. Or Ford can tell you, maybe...

FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. Too much pressure can REALLY screw things up.

BUY AN EXTRA CAN!

Other than that, it's really a piece of cake. Should only cost you around $25-$35 to fix, if that doesnt do you you may have a bad pump.

Hope this helps:)
