Its been making some noise for a while, but I wasnt quite sure what it was 'till I looked at it yesterday and noticed it seemed to be loose. I had just brought it over to a mechanic tonight, I shut it off, opened the hood, and noticed the smoke and then saw the serpentine belt melt in half. Pushed on the compressor a bit and it wouldnt move at all.

Now, what I can I check to see if its the clutch and not the compressor? If it is the compressor, can I find that at a local auto parts store? Would it just be easier to bypass it and put on a smaller belt? If so, whats the size of the belt? This is on my '91 btw.

Determine if the compressor is locked up or if the A/C pulley is siezed (bearing). The A/C clutch assembly is readily available at auto parts stores and a new or rebuilt compressor should be available, but it may take a day or two to get it. If it is the clutch pulley bearing a new bearing should be available for your model year, but given the age of the car it would be prudent to replace the clutch assembly. Disconnect the electrical connection to the clutch and the pulley should be free to turn (acually it is free to turn anytime the A/C is not engaged). You can put a socket on the A/C compressor crankshaft bolt and see if the compressor turns freely (clockwise).

If it is siezed and will not turn, and the clutch pulley will not turn, then the clutch is either stuck or "welded" from heat and both the clutch and A/C compressor should be replaced. You can simply replace the clutch assembly and leave the A/C clutch coil disconnected so that you have a free turning pulley. You can also eliminate the A/C compressor and clutch and use a shorter belt as you suggest. This process can be found by doing a search as it has been discussed in full many times before.
