sorry...thought that was a given. yes...sometimes when the compressor cycles, it gives a groaning/growling sound.

Has the system ever been opened up? Sounds like it could be moisture in the system. Or it could be a line that isn't secured properly, letting it vibrate on something.

the system's been sealed as long as i've owned it. think i could shoot some of that refill in a can in there with the compressor oil in it?

Check the refrigerant charge. If it's down at all then some has leaked out which can cause a groaning, but as mentioned above moisture contamination is a big reason for groaning right up until the black death...
