Hey guys I have a couple of questions on my 97 SHO audio system. I was wondering if the stock system on some of these cars came with a Stock Subwoofer like the 2nd Generations did? There is a cut out in the rear where the speakers are for one by the looks? I was also wondering if you could Put one in with the stock system? Or what are some ideas of getting one in there ? Thank you for the info

no they didn't come with a sub, and all G3 cars have the cutout. Yes you can wire in a subwoofer you just need to find the right size. IIRC there was a writeup on www.v8sho.com with the speaker sizes and such.

Yes, the 96 SHOs came with a JBL system instead of the MACH system, and had a factory subwoofer in the center cutout.

What type of wirring would I need to connect a 6x9 SuBwoofer to the stock 97 Mach System and would the system support this? For quality?

The MACH system also doesn't have RCA outputs so make sure you buy an amp with high level inputs so you can just tap into the rear speakers for your signal.

I'm working on adding a sub to my '97 SHO this spring. Your best bet for adding a subwoofer would probably be buying/building a small box for the trunk and using a 10" subwoofer. It'll sound much better than a 6x9 subwoofer, plus finding a powered 6x9 sub would be difficult to find.

You'd need a 96 JBL RCU, and the wiring harness from the RCU to the sub. Everything else should plug right in.

The JBL RCU cut low frequencies to the rear speakers, to compensate for the sub. Frankly, I'd rather put in a decent 8" or 10" sub in the trunk. I have two 10" Kenwoods, and I think that's too much for a balanced system. I just wired in a line-level convertor for RCA cables, connecting to the rear channels.

Or two RF 15" DVC's... and a completely custom stereo besides the front door speakers.

I have a stock system with 2 12" mtx subs in the trunk and personally I think its too much bass. They might not be going back in when I get my ************* running again.

When I got my SHO it had a drivers side lower door speaker that was blown, so I removed the factory lower door speakers and replaced them with the rear factory speakers and replaced the rear speakers with Infinity reference 2way speakers and added a 8" tube sub with built in amp, it sounds pretty good with just the right amount of bass.

The original box? I'm not sure what you mean by that.

If you mean you want to mount a 10" sub in the rear parcel shelf, I would recommend against it. You'd need a "free-air" sub for it to work, and there aren't that many out there. The ones that are available aren't that good from what I've been told. I would recommend a single 8" or 10" sub in a small enclosure, mounted back behind the seats. That would give enough bass to properly balance a stock or nearly stock system.

Aww, come on now. tons of us gen 2 people put 10" subs in our stock JBL enclosures.:naughty:

Don't know how it would work in a gen 3 since I'm not sure if the enclosure would mount to the rear deck, but if you could get a sub enclosure for a gen 3 I'm sure you could cut it to fit a 10" sub, not too hard to power a 10"er either:salute:

The GIII SHO has no sub enclosure though. It's open on the back to the trunk, and would therefore need a free-air sub. I guess you could somehow mount an MDF enclosure to the underside of the parcel shelf.

Oh. My mistake then, and I agree with silvapain about free air subs not being the best option. In my experience they never perform well.
