I'm swapping in a 97 v8 sho motor into a 99, and I've run into a problem with the wiring. The air injection pump connector on the 97 is different and has only 4 wires. The 99 connector has 5 wires -- it has an extra red wire.
Any suggestions on how I can deal with it? What is the red wire?
About ready to put this back in the car, and now I'm stuck.

The air pump (or smog pump) is the same part number for both years of the SHO (97 and 99) and yes it does mention that it fits various year Taurus and Sable models.

To me, that means the 99 harness on your car should plug into the air pump, which ever one you have in there.
Could this be a California issue?

Turns out I still had the old air pump, it was still mounted on the frame which I still have.
Now I'm concerned that the engine is from a 96 and not a 97, which means there is also a difference in the engine wiring plug. Hmmmm.

Change the title of this thread (only you can do that) to read 96 motor into 99 car....

Maybe put it in the emergency section and request what the problems are from early series to late series swaps.

There are a lot of people who will know what the changes were from early to late series (I think the football in the dash is not transferrable, and the speedometer runs from a VSS in a 96, and the ABS system later), but I am not one of them.

From the v8sho.com archives,

The 97 harness has the Tan/Orange on pin #5 and the Black/Yellow on pin #10.
The 96 has just the opposite - Tan/Orange on pin #10 and Black/Yellow on pin #5.

I just checked my car and engine plugs, and they both agree on the 97 pins (Tan/OR on 5, and blk/yel on 10)
Also looked at the EEC and it looks like a F7xxx part number, so a 97 there.

So maybe this car was a 96 1/2, I dunno. There was another difference in the starter, the 96/97 motor had a spade connector for the starter, and the 99 has a bolt-on.
The aftermarket starters just include a bolt-to-spade jumper to fit both, so no help ID the year.

I guess at this point I put it back in and see if it runs. If not, I will not be a happy camper, as it is a lot of work to pull them out and swap the motors!

Before you re-install, determine if you have to change the engine harness (put the 99 harness on your 97 engine). I cannot imagine why, but check, just in case. But if it does, maybe some of the sensors have to be swapped as well.
It will be a lot easier to swap the harness and sensors with the engine on the ground in front of you.

You have to answer the question.... is it gas or is it spark that I am lacking.

There is usually a Schrader type (tire) valve on the fuel rail in the engine compartment, and try an exposed spark plug, grounded to the motor for your spark question.

Given the scanner can't connect, I would think a wiring issue.
Where can I find the wiring diagram for a 97 sho and a 99 sho?
Google is no help.

Try it old-school first.
Put some "starter fluid" in the intake past your throttle and see if it tries to start when you roll it over. Might surprise you.
