I was thinking about the 96 upgrade on my 92 and I noted on some previous post that as far as knuckles and calipers were concerned i needed 94/95 Taurus or Sable knuckles with ABS and 94-99 SHO or Sable calipers. The recommendations on this thread are a bit more selective: 94/95 calipers and nothing about Sable knuckles. Is there any disadvantage to choosing from the wider selection? (I already have the caliper brackets and rotors and am waiting until I need to replace the old rotors or pads to make the switch.)

Racer X,
Thanks, for clarifing about the general use being less than desirable for your everyday use. Do you have a recommendation of another brand and/or type of brake pad that is still affordable and of better quality? I can add it to the list, Thanks.
alllbuti,
Generally, some Taurus' and Sables and Taurus shos suspension parts (and Others) are quite similar in some cases (but Not all). I am not specificly sure of the interchange between them (hence these post). I can only assume most would work unless otherwise noted (and I'm corrected) in the above post.
Someone with more knowledge than I, could better answer a question of, example: "Will 93 Sable (Yr./ Model) rear calipers work for rear 96+ upgrade for a 95 SHO application"... a more specific question will net an answer with more relivent responces.

I will be updating my first post as I get more info.

BTW: Kilty423, Very Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your thread; I just wanted to add specific info for all to benefit!

You can use any 94 or 95 Taurus or Sable knuckles, just make sure they have the ABS tabs if your car has ABS. For 96+ calipers and brackets, I like to just buy loaded remanufactured calipers from the parts store. But for only about $100 you can upgrade to the Cobra PBR calipers.

All SHO rear brakes are essentially the same from 93-99. They are a solid disc. 89-92 SHOs used vented rear rotors and different calipers. The 96 rear brake upgrade that this thread is about is referring to using the 96-99 SHO front 11.6" rotor on the rear with 89-92 SHO calipers and adapter brackets.

IMO, there is rarely much benefit to upgrading the rear brakes. Just use decent pads on whatever you have. I have the 11.6" rotors on the rear, but mainly did it just for looks because I needed new rotors/calipers anyway.

All Taurus/Sable rear disc brakes are the same from '93-'06 (although in the Gen IV's Ford became enamored with rear drums again, but discs were still available on certain trims, and on most if not all wagons).

Eggszachary. :thumb: I have the 11.6" rears as well (plus a 13" rear kit in the basement somewhere), and it is 100000% for asthetics only. Good pads and changing the biasing make the real difference in rear braking.
