I know there is a thousand places that describe the 96 brake upgrade but I'm throwing the question out once again.

What exactly do you need for the 96 brake upgrade. So far this is what I've come up with:

94-95 Taurus front knuckle with ABS sensors

1996+ brake caliper

1996+ brake rotor

1996+ brake caliper mount - part that mounts brake caliper to 94-95 knuckle.

1996+ Performance Friction Pads

Is there anything else that I'm forgetting.

Is the 94-95 knuckles specific to the SHO or with the stock Taurus work too?

The same question goes for the 96+ brake calipers, caliper mounts, and rotors. Are these SHO specific?

Does the Caliper Mount need to be from a 94-95 or a 96+?

Any help with answering all of these questions would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, if someone has the 94-95 Knuckles that I need, I'd be happy to trade for some powdercoating work. Some pictures of my work can be viewed here:

The last piece is a part that I took into work so that I could take the pictures on a Stainless Steel work table. I think it give it a cool background. Scott

You need the knuckles from the 94/95 SHO the reg taurus has smaller brakes. The caliper can be from a 94-99 SHO. And the Brakets (mounts) have to be 96+.

This is what you need, nothing else will work:

  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Steering knuckles from a 94/95 Taurus/Sable w/ ABS (does not have to be from a SHO)
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Brake caliper from a 94-99 Taurus/Sable or 95+ Continental (must have 5187 (passenger side) and 5188 (driver side) stamped on them)
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Caliper bracket from a Gen III SHO or 95+ Continental (must have FN74 stamped on them {both sides are same})
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Gen III SHO or 95+ Continental rotor
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Pads, preferably the GEN III SHO 598 size, but 94/95 size will also work
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Knuckle to strut pinch bolt (2)
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Knuckle to locating arm pinch bolt and nut (2 bolts and 2 nuts)
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Tie rod end castle nut and cotter pin (2 nuts)
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Axle nuts (2 nuts)
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Caliper bracket bolts (4 bolts)
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Crush washers for brake lines (2 per caliper)
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">
Might as well put new bearings in the new-used knuckles.

I recommend getting the reasonably priced and ready to bolt on loaded calipers from Advanced since they include the correct calipers and brackets. They also come with some crap pads, but you can swap out whatever better pads you want. Just make sure you get the correct parts in the box, as apparently many of them were packaged incorrectly (wrong caliper in driver side box).

This subject really needs to be straightened out once and for all for all the N00bs out there. I think I got everything right; let me know if I didn't or if I forgot something. :)
