Hey...

Quick question...anyone have any experience on replacing the door window trim..?? I have 3 pieces of trim that are rotting from the inside out..bubbled through the black rubber coating..other than that, the car is still pretty mint other than stone chips on the front bumper cover..will hit the wrecker and try and find some half decent replacements...will any Taurus trim fit..??...thanks in advance...

I have one or two (forget) NEW in box, some of the last ones after Ford discontinued them. They weren't cheap, cost me something ridiculous to get them in (around $100 each, from memory). I think I also have some others kicking around, will have to confirm.

they are a different design.. the chrome on the doors is just a little strip on part of the trim, while the black one is one big piece, it would look fine from far away but if you got up close you'd notice the obvious mis-match.

I'm preparing to replace all 4 window run channels on my 95 SHO. Last fall I purchased them from a u-pull-it yard from a mint looking 94 Taurus with only 22,000 km on the odometer. The 94's rear end was badly crumpled so I think the car was written off. It was fortunate that the 94 had manual wiindows - in order to remove the channels you need to be able to move the window up and down. Removing the channels is fairly simple - took me about and hour to remove all four. You need to be careful removing the front channels - they can bend easily. The Helm manual actually states that removal and installation of the channels is a 2 man job.

I prepared my new (but used) channels in the following manner:
1) Scrub the rubber surfaces with diluted dish detergent and a brush.
2) Paint the rubber surfaces with a product called "Forever Black". This is not a rubber conditioner - it is a black dye. Each surface needed 3 applications of the dye.
3) After letting the dye dry for 24 hours (the instructions on the bottle says it dries in 15-20 minutes) apply 303 Aerospace Protectant. This protectant is better than anything else I've come across. It maintains a low gloss finish for months and months.

Why does the metal encased in the rubber corrode? There has been some talk of high pressure car washes somehow forcing water under the rubber. This may or may not be the case. I am thinking that in my case the problem started when scraping freezing rain from the window. I use the point of an ice scraper to gouge a line into the ice. It is possible that I knicked the rubber while doing the spraping. How many people here are seeing the problem and where do you live?

FYI, the moldings / trim pieces are manufacturing plant-specific (atlanta ones are different from... Canada?).

Also FYI, they (Atlanta ones anyway) are made in France.

Great replies guys...Well...in my case, i would conclude the rubber coated trim got puncture while scraping the frost from the windows in the winter and then high pressure washes in the summer..i have 3 total on the 4 doors that need to be replaced..not too bad I guess..i'll check with a body shop on removal and check the wrecking yard for a 95 slo sho..I'm sure they are plentiful..thanks again
