Your 93 could be either an automatic or a standard. The automatic will be a 3.2 and the standard will be 3.0. This was the first year of the automatic and they are not as robust as the 94 - 95 models. You will have to try the car to see if it shifts right and goes into overdrive nicely if it is stock. By this time, many of these cars have had the transmission redone, so you might try to determine that from the previous owner. If it has been redone, it is up to the specs of the 94 - 95 automatic. Down the road, a clutch is going to cost you $1200.00 and an automatic rebuild will be around $2000.00, so that is not a big deciding factor. Call around to a couple of shops to see. Try to buy a car where the transmission (automatic) or the clutch (manual) has been done recently. Try to negotiate the price down so that one of these repairs is not a killer.

both trans have there weak point. if you beat an auto it will blow up. if you beat a mtx it will blow up (diff pin eject). only difference is the auto can be rebuilt. if you have a diff pin go in an mtx you need a new trans. key is take it easy.. until you get a wavetrac.

things to watch out for other than the trans:

oil in the plug wells (needs new seals)

paint rubbed off the front of the intake (bad motor mount)

chattering from the trans (bad tob)

oil between the trans and oil pan ( bad rear main)

knocking from the engine or low oil pressure light flickering (could be bad rod bearings)

its hard to tell if cam seals are bad if the timing cover is on. other wise that would be another thing to check. also the front crank seal. just check to see if there's oil coming from the oil pump down to the front of the pan.

thats all i can think of right now.

Don't give up on the car if it is an automatic. As long as it is good when you buy it, and you don't pound it savagely, it will work out for you. When you are stuck in traffic, inching along, you will be glad to have an automatic! The manual transmissions are far from trouble free, mainly because of the clutch with it's constantly running release bearing. But with normal driving, either transmission is fine. Just concentrate on the condition of the car, and getting it for a good price.

If you get it and it's the first year auto, change the computer to a 94-95 D4U1... Your transmission will thank you! It's the better computer and it will have better shifts also!
