'93 MTX Stalls...

My first help/maintenance post.... I'm sure there will be pleanty more.

Alright on to the problem.

I recently bought a SHO that had a clutch/transmission problem (thank god it was only the clutch) for $500. I've owned 2 other SHOs, both '93 and ATX I knew I was into a money pit. But I thought it was well worth it.

Anyways, I start my car up just about everyday to let it run since I don't have plates/insurance yet. I've noticed after I let it run for oh, 5-10 minutes the RPMs start surging going from idle to about 1k then drop down to about ~500 or so. After it does that for a minute the car stalls out and I have to restart it. Once I restart it it does the same thing, except it doesn't take as long to stall out.

Any ideas what this problem could be? AFAIK this car has never had a 60k let alone a 100k service done to it. Would any of the things you do with a 60k relate to this problem?

start by first setting your idle correctly. The idle set procedure is in the How To Section, or just search for "Idle Set"

If that doesnt fix your problem, run the codes (see my signature below). Could point to the IAC or the TPS.

I had the same problem and found that I needed to clean out my IAC valve. The IAC is the silver cylinder next to the throttle body. Even today if I disconnect my battery and dont set the idle correctly, the idle will bounce.

But does it bounce enough to make it stall out?

Also, my CEL light doesn't come on. Could it still possibly be setting off codes and not activate my light? I don't have a scanner to check my codes and autozone only does '95 and newer (introduction to ODBII?). How much would a decent scanner run me? Or maybe someone in the Metro Detroit (Taylor, Ferndale etc) has one and could help me out?
