I have heard about the 93's and are known for tranny problems. I was wondering what kind of problems were common? Also I have a shutter between 1st and 2nd and the downshifts are rough as well. Also when I accelerate to about 20mph or so (1stgear), and take my foot of the gas and just coast(switches to 2nd). But when I go back to accelerate again (back into the gear) its a really rough switch. Also it has happened a couple of times before where i will floor it and it will miss the gear i was downshifting into and the rmps just shoot up. Then i just take my foot of the gas and then it will go back into gear. I tried changing the transmission fluid and adding some lucans transmission fix...but that didnt fix anything. Any suggestions on what you think is wrong and what i should do? I hope i didnt confuse you all too much!
Thanks alot. -Todd

I have a 93 ATX, and have already had to get it rebuilt (not fun or cheap). If shifting is your problem, I'd try to keep it simple and eitehr get the compuer out of a 94, which has improved shifting settings, or get a new shift kit. A coupel months before mine got so hot that it burts and dumped fluid all over the road, I noticed something. I was in a McDonald's drive through, sitting RIGHT up against the wall. I put the tranny in park (while I had my window down) and i noticed everything got quieter. So I repeated it a few times, goign between park and drive. I noticed that every tiem I went into drive, I could hear an intermittent brushing sound, relative to the speed of the engine. A 6 year military contract, a year and a half, and $2200 later, It was rebuilt. The guy siad that the torque convertor was shot to **** and back, and that's what the brushing sound was. The brushing caused friction, the friction created heat, and the heat caused it to burst. The guy said that most of the other parts were just worn out. So if anything, get a new shift kit and torque convertor if you hear thsoe soudns I was talking about. Hope that helps.

Hate to say it, Todd, but it sounds like it may be rebuild time. :frown:

Out of curiosity, how many miles do you have on your '93?

I am in the process of replacing my tranny with a used one. My car has almost 190,000 on it so i can't imagine that it was the originial one in there. I however worked fine in first but revved out in anyother gear. Reverse is fine. The only clue i had that it was going was a slight clunk on a downshift. Shifted up great. Go figure.

I was on the highway and stepped on the gas to burn out and around this guy messing with me( I just wanted to take a right on this exit, and he wouldn't let me over) I gunned it and got in front of him and it all the sudden felt like I was running over steel pipes on the highway, just a horrid jerking and WHAM, WHAM, WHAM, WHAM, WHAM, and loss of power, I was able to click on the OD switch a couple of times and restore power( I bet the guy that was now behind me was filling his pants! LOL) so I got home no problem, I got on the highway the next day and about 8 miles from home it bought it. I just lost power and the engine just free-revved, I get off the highway on the next exit, and had to creep home in first gear the whole way. WASN"T FUN IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC, hate to say it but "I WAS THAT GUY" that day :( replacing the tranny and engine soon, engine is fine, I am just going to pull it and lower a new combo in, then repair, and rebuild the combo. Good luck on your tranny, tell us what you find out :thumb:
