My folk's 93 ATX (+/- 180k) has a problem.

The car will start fine, so long as you press the accelerator and keep the rev's up but it will stall out and die the second you let off the gas.

When it dies, it makes a "huff" sound through the MAF/Airbox. It is not triggering a Check Engine Light. No codes in KOEO. Could not walk him through the KOER test over the phone.

Car is completely stock.

Any thoughts on where I should look first? They were able to limp it to my brother's house, so at least it is not sitting on the side of the road.

Thanks.

Try to unplug the MAF and see if it makes a difference. Sounds like a common symptom for them. Or pop it off and try to clean her out some.

Good luck

The Air Bypass Valve(IAC) is stuck.Try tapping on the valve and recheck to see if it now idle's.if it does replace it or try cleaning it out with choke spray.

Thanks for the leads. They have swapped out the MAF, no change, so I suspect the problem is most likely the IAB/IAC valve. I'll report back, hopefully, what the actual ailment turns out to be.

More than likely the IAB. Id also check the TPS as well though.

If the IAB is the original one on your '89, then it is "cleanable"

:edit: Just reread the title zzzzz I dont know if the Gen 2 IAB can be cleaned

It was the IAC valve. Took it off (that bottom bolt was a pain) and cleaned it as best I could with B12 and the problem is solved, at least for the moment. If it acts up again, we'll go ahead and replace it.

Again, many thanks. I never had this problem in the 89.
