My friends 92 died today going down the highway. He mentioned something earlier in the day about it cutting out or bogging down at middle rpms every now and then. Then on his way home, it died on the interstate. He said it just bogged down and ran at 1000 rpms and wouldn't rev any higher even by dropping down a couple of gears. He said when he hit second it picked up a little then stalled out and hasn't been able to turn it over since. He tried pull starting it and said it just kept rolling when he dropped the clutch, didn't even ****. All the battery and ground connections are good. When you turn the key on, the pump primes but the engine won't turn over. I pulled the codes and tried to start it and it just barely started spinning over and stopped. The codes I got were as follows, KOEO 111. Memory

211-Ignition PIP signal was erratic or missing.
214-Error in CID circuit
452-VSS Problem
528-System shows voltage at pin 10 or pin 30 (PNP, CPP switch)
542-Fuel Pump open, bad ground, or always on

I had thought that it siezed when he first told me but I'm not sure. It is a quart low on oil but it doesn't smell burnt at all and he said the temp was in the AL" range. The crank sensor, belts, and clutch were replaced less than 10,000 miles ago and the rest of the 60k and t-stat were done @ 1000 miles ago. Where is the VSS located?

The CID is only has 10,000 miles on it though. Even if it were bad, wouldn't it still turn over? We're going to try and see if it will turn over by hand, we'll check the sensor then too. I don't have a gauge for testing fuel pressure but the pump does prime.

Well, just kind of an update. I went and worked on it some more tonight with no luck. I also misunderstood my friend the first time. I guess he was cruising along and it bogged down to 1000 rpms even while he downshifted. After he pulled over it dropped to an idle and then he shut it off. Then it wouldn't crank or roll start. I tried bypassing the wires on the cpp switch with no change. When your standing outside of the car and the key is turned to on, you can hear the IRCM click, then the starter relay on the center of the firewall, then the abs controller. Every time you turn the key to start the starter relay clicks once but nothing else. Still has good battery voltage. I will look through the wiring more tomorrow. What else can keep it from turning over? The motor spins over normally with a ratchet and socket also btw so I don't think it's siezed.

DIS ground problem.

More severe than that. A DIS grounding fault won't cause a "No Crank" symptom", but will cause a "Cranks but won't fire"

Start with the starter troubleshooting. You will likely find a fulty battery cable, either ground or positive. Use the outline at http://www.spmotorsports.com/starter_troubleshoot.html for your guide.

Can't do anything else until the starter works and if one of the primary power cables has failed, it will cause all of the listed symptoms.

Anytime the car dies, you will get fuel pump codes.

And anytime you get O2 codes you will get fuel pump codes 542 and/or 543. Note that despite popular opinion on this forum, the car does NOT have to stall to get 542/543.
