Just like it says, I have a 91 SHo that is putting out 17-18V at idle. I ssume that it's the voltage regulator, and not the new battery I put in. Any thoughts?

It should read 13 or 14 volts with the car running. With the car off the terminals on the battery should read 12 volts. I've done that alternator bit and it is a bit of work.

For healthy and functional battery, alternator and voltage regulator, the voltage should be 12.5 VDC engine off and 13.6-13.8 VDC engine idling. In the world of SHO engine services, the alternator is a 30-minute piece of cake.

potential problem

I burned out a battery with an overworking alternator. I would consider not driving it right now. I believe you'll burn out the battery. Please guys, any thoughts on this?:type:

If it isn't fried already, any continued running of the car at that voltage will almost assure the battery will quickly be toast!

Yep. Totally right. I drove my car home from school on an overcharging alternator ~180 miles and toasted my battery (I didn't realize it at the time, it was warm. I discovered the battery issue in the cold...while my roommate was laughing at me.

As for your overcharging issue, it might NOT be the Voltage Regulator. My car was doing the same thing and I replaced the voltage regulator, only to discover it was the alternator. One of the sauder joints on the alternator leads broke, but stayed together when the alternator spun (contact from rotation), but was arcing. It was sending 18+ volts to my battery, causing the EATC to default to off and the stereo not to work. At least my lights were nice and bright...

I would suggest going to a junkyard and pulling a voltage regulator from a junker. Really quick to do...and it will tell you what you need to look at. There's also a pinpoint test that you can run in the SHO diagnostic manual.
