Hey guys, I have a '91 SHO with a rod shifter (I believe), and noticed earlier that 5th gear and reverse have disappeared! The shifter moves into 5th and reverse effortlessly, almost as if there were no trans at all, but when I release the clutch nothing happens, the car idles and revs like its in neutral, and no noise is heard from the transmission at all. I'm thinking its an issue with the linkage, any ideas? :thankyou:

sounds like the clip that holds the 5th/rev arm may have popped off, which would mean that nothing is engaging the gears for those. unfortunately, that means the trans needs to come apart....

First verify what type of shifter you have (cable or rod) If you have the rod type then seperate the rod shifter from transaxle(this is done underneath vehicle at rear of transaxle) After disconnecting, shift the trans by hand and see if the problem is the same. That way you can isolate the external linkage and possibly rule it out. Otherwise have someone shift the car while you watch the movement of linkage under the car. If nothing is found externally then the transaxle will need to be removed and inspected further.

This^

And no it cannot be serviced in any way externally , its a remove the trans and open it up on the counter procedure.

if there is a way for the external linkage to work fine in 1-4 but not in reverse-5th, I'd like to know about it.
