It was suggested to me that the Borla cat-back for a '91 SHO should fit the '89 with rod shifter upgrade and would only involve perhaps minor mods for it to fit the stock '89 with the cable shifters.

I wish I installed the rod shifter upgrade when it was readily available. It's just too expensive for me to purchase now (I think the SHO Shop sells it for $900).

Has anyone successfully (!) tried to fit a '91 or later year Borla cat-back on an '89?

Borla no longer makes a cat-back for the '89.

Thanks.

It's the same car so I don't see why it wouldn't fit unless the cable shifter was in the way. I doubt that too. Keep your eyes open for used rod shifters. I see them go frequently for $100-$200.

Thanks for the suggestions. Where is the best place to scout (e.g. specific classifieds) for the rod shifter kit?

267,000 miles
oil change every 2000 to 3000 miles

Thanks for the suggestions. Where is the best place to scout (e.g. specific classifieds) for the rod shifter kit?

- 267,000 miles
- oil change every 2000 to 3000 miles
- replaced almost every sensor!
- original paint due to Tyvek car cover (I love it) and leather interior covered with Wet Okale neoprene cut to fit covers
- new radiator, motor mounts, struts (stock replacement)
- tear down, clean out and rebuild of intake manifold.
- rear cam shaft seal
- clutch every 70,000 mi on average.
- normal interval for plugs, wires, valve lash, coolant change, etc.

What's not to like about the car?
It's just a high maintenance woman that doesn't talk back.

This isn't a kit. Just look for someone parting out an MTX from 91-95 and ask for the mounting hardware that holds it to the car.

Aren't the shifter cables for the cable shifter routed inside the car under the console before they exit the floorpan rather than directly under the shifer as the rod shifter is? I suspect that other than the bend to accomodate the (in your case future) rod shifter, that it will still mate up perfectly since the catback ****** at the y-pipe is still in the same place for both.

The cat-back exhausts are basically the same for 89 and 91. I have done a swap between a 91 and 89 and no problems. I don't see why Borla would be any different.
