It's not much work at all....there's more than a few guys here that have em...unfortunatly, I'm not so sure a free-air sub would work all that great in a small enclosure like that. Free air subs are designed to mount to the package shelf of on a baffle board behind the back seat using the trunk as an enclosure. I'd use this one instead...

but that's just my humble opinion....

or this one...it requires a smaller enclosure...only .3 - .6 cubic feet for sealed enclosure and .6 - 1.0 cuft in a ported box.

oh I just saw you won the auction.

You could bypass the box or cut the bottom out of it. If you use the free air sub in a box, the pressure will not be good for the voicecoil.

my 93 had no sub. The 95 that was rear ended had the box. I suspect it was from another car though; the speaker that was in the box was a "mach" ford speaker. It WAS an 8". And it looked like the box was installed in the 95 by a previous owner because the connectors were not factory and the itty bitty amp had magic marker on the back that said "in" and "out"

I left the mach speaker in there and added a JL 8" in a box I cobbled from the particle board of an old computer desk. I've been wanting to swap the 2 speakers and put the JL 8" in the "factory" box but havent been properly motivated yet. Maybe I'll do that tonight...ech.

It's easy as cake.

1) use a prybar on the box to get it open. The glue Ford used to glue the two halves together is STRONG. Don't worry, you won't hurt anything. Really.

2) Remove old speaker. Duh.

3) Take a hammer to that little support thingy at the bottom of the box. It snaps right off, disturbingly easily.

4) Get a dremel or other rotary tool. See the top of the box, where there's a lip that sticks out from it where the old 6" sub mounted to? Hack that off. I used a dremel with a tungsten carbide cutting wheel. You could use a hacksaw if you wanted to. I can't really describe how to orient the tool, but basically you want to chop that lip off horizontal with the plane of the top of the box. Did I say that right? I don't know. Reply if you didn't understand and I'll try to elaborate further.

5) Lay the new 8" speaker on the hole you just enlarged. That thing fits in there perfectly! Amazing! That's what I said, anyway, when I did it. It does fit disturbingly well if you did it right.

6) Use a sharpie, grease pen, whatever, to mark the 8 holes of the speaker on the plastic. Get a drill with a 1/8" bit (or a dremel with a drill bit, like I did), and drill holes where you marked.

7) Replace speaker and screw it in. The screws will thread themselves. Air-tight.

8) If you want to add foam or whatever for a baffle, now's when you do it.

9) lay a nice big thick bead of clear RTV (or your own favorite sealing agent) around the perimeter of the bottom half of the box. Replace top half of box. You did remember to hook up the speaker wires, didn't you?

10) Let dry 24 hours (you don't want pressure from the sub blowing the RTV out, do you?).

11) Enjoy!

Oh, I almost forgot, if you want to lay a thin bead of sealant under the lip of the subwoofer where it rests on the box, you can do that too. You shouldn't need it, but if you're really worried about the box being air-tight, it will ease your mind.

i had no tools except a saw and some vice grips, sawed the inner cirlce in small pieces and broke them off, broke off the bottom parts too cause the speaker was too deep. got me the 8" Rockford Fosgate Punch 1 off ebay for 40 bucks. You get at the bolts by removing the backseat completely and digging your hands underneath and removing the buts

...or you could've just gone into the trunk with, I think, a 13mm socket and a couple of 6" extensions. There are bolts inside the corners of the box on the underside. Look for them, they're there. **** of a lot easier than going through the seat.

why take the box apart? i cut my hole and left the tabs at the bottom intacted. they help support the JL 8W0 8" i used. i also reused the stock screw mounts by cutting them out of the plastic i had cut off and hammering them back into a predrilled hole.

the sound is exactly what i was looking for. deep precise bass that is nice and loud but doesn't rattle the car like some rice rocket.
