Has anyone ever heard of having the tranny pop out of first gear because of a very light flywheel. Previous owner said that it sometimes popped out of first gear because of the very light flywheel and that a bit higher revs if first gear will keep it from slipping out. I started thinking clutch pressure plate??? I'd love to hear from anyone who has run a super light flywheel like this and if you ever had that experience. , It stays in gear once it is moving, but it did pop out of first when I first took it around the block.

that's kinds what I thought, but up to now, the prev owner has been telling the truth near as I can tell, It did stay in gear when I pushed up the revs and got going, just popped out at almost idle..hmmmm

The flywheel should have nothing to do with the "pooping out of first gear".

He may be telling you the truth, but may just be mis-informed about what is going on. If it happened the same time he put the flywheel in, he probably screwed something else up in the process.

Does it only pop out of first, and not any other gear? Does the shifter physically move when it pops out?

I'll know more after wednesday when I get the exhaust put on and can drive it around more, It seemed to me that the shifter popped back some when it went of out engaged and a bit of a grind like when you don't quite get it into reverse and start to let out the clutch...

Clutch disc could be contaminated or defective.

Unrelated but curious to know how does it drive with the lighter flywheel? Especially in stop and go traffic? I'd appreciate your opinion.

THanks Jim,
I'll give a full report after the exhaust gets on and I can drive it around out of my little neighborhood.

Well, I got the exhaust today and cobbled it on. I'll take it to the pros next week to really align and tighten everything up tight. I did drive it around a more today and it didn't pop out of first at all. I don't think I was putting it all the way in gear, just a different feel than my other MTX. The 8 lb flywheel, yeah, I can feel a difference after the clutch is all the way out that it revs up and picks up a bit quicker than Chastity. I'm a little worried about some random tapping, although muted that I am hearing, but it could just be valves. Evidently the former former owner replace "all the gaskets upper motor", I'm thinking valve covers, valve seals maybe, I'm hoping he didn't put in new shims, but if hew did that they were the right size. Judging from the other things I've found, I think the guys were in way over their heads. I am too in terms of vast experience, but I do understand the systems and know when to ask questions. I mean hey, he couldn't get it running and I put it back together the way I understand it should be and it started right up!! Just lucky I guess..

So do you like the lightened flywheel over the normal one?

Shims are easy to measure and replace. There's a sticky on here how to do it. But you do need the tools.

The maintenance on these engines are actually way overblown. They're pretty straightforward to work on but you really do need the Rotunda service tool kit to make it easy.

I drove it around a bit more today and I do notice a big difference with the light flywheel, I'm getting used to it, you have do clutch/gas differently, ..more like a big guy race car driver I suspect, where you rev and then drop the clutch, like putting people down at red lights...so..for old guy me, I'm not liking it so much...yet, After the tranny gets figured out..grinding when decelerating..I drive it more seriously and be able to tell better. I do for sure have the popping out of first gear issue solved with higher rpms before letting out the clutch.. I think I also have a bad rf wheel bearing, but then there were two brand new bearings and hubs that came in boxes with the car. So...YaY

Good deal man. Yeah I've always wondered how the flywheels would do in traffic. Compared to my V-8, the V-6 is a gnarly monster especially with the 3.2L and Spec stage 1 clutch. But it is one fun car to drive.

So...everyday is for learning, I didn't realize it before, cause how would I know, but I'm pretty sure that the clutch has been out of adjustment//pedal height since day one on bob with the 8lb flywheel/. I adjusted it today and even though I was gingerly pulling out of the driveway with my new rear brakes, it had no trouble staying in gear. I think it was popping out of first because the clutch wasn't fully engaging in the first place. We'll see more tomorrow. But it felt different and better after I fixed the clutch adjustment and the pedal starts pulling the clutch as soon as you push, rather than half an inch or an inch down the stroke...

Cool, I grew up in East Pines right next to the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, and then lived in Langley Park and Takoma Park until I moved to Minnesota in 1986. So, did you go to Bladensburg? I went to Parkdale and then to Northwestern, but I quit that scene at that time
