what are some of the symtomes of a sho that need a 60k tune up(valve adjustment
alittle rougher idle?
aloss in power....and low end tourqe?
alittle loss of engine vacum?
alittle leaner...acording to the gauge?
i thought it would be richer......
and if the motor has 163 k on it and no valve adjustment .....would this be a sign that it is time for one, and would the car lose 1/2 a second in time very suddenly?? especially with all these symtomes

ps sorry about spelling didn't have time to proof read....later

A little bit of Monica in my life,
A little bit of Erica by my side.
A little bit of Rita's all I need,
A little bit of Tina's all I see.
A little bit of Sandra in the sun,
A little bit of Mary all night long.

Sorry. The lot of "little bits" got me grooving. :D

60k maintenance is preventative maintenance. A clear sign is a little loss in performance over a long period of time, oil in the plug wells, no known service in 50k+ miles, leaking water pump, etc.

When we do a 60k, we disassemble the intake completely, installing new gaskets. This may take care of your vacuum problem (or it could be a vacuum hose that's eaten through, etc.). Lean / Rich could be an O2 problem, a MAF problem, an LPM problem, etc., etc..

The best advice I can give anyone is:

If you want your car performing at its best possible level, and you want the peace of mind of knowing you've addressed a good chunk of the issues with the SHO engine, and you're going to be keeping your car for a while, go for a full-on 60k. It's going to cost some bucks, but for the serious enthusiast, it's an expected part of ownership.

Good luck!

listen to fre... errr yamaha. PREVENTATIVE maintenance is done to avoid problems. Don't wait until your car is running like crap to do it.

You mentioned 163,000 miles without a valve gapping. That alone has cost you some valve lift and possibly some cam lobe wear. You didn't mention whether or not the timing belt has been replaced. Ford recommends replacing the timing belt in your 3.2L every 100,000 miles. If that hasn't been done yet, you have lost cam timing due to the slight amount of belt stretching. How about the plugs? Every 60,000 miles on those or you are working with overly large gaps. Plug wires? After almost 10 years on those, they are certainly in less than optimal condition to contain the high energy spark. Valve cover and plug well seals? Oil in the spark plug wells will result in spark leaks and misfires. And so on, and so on.

It doesn't increase performance to do the preventative maintenance. It prevents you from losing the performance that you had to start with. Looks like you waited too long already.
