...and that was because I had a powertrain warranty (so the thermostat was not included) that would cover 1/2 of the price of the water pump.
I called the shop up and asked how much it was and they said 740 something and i almost fainted.
Then they ralized I have the warranty so they took off a certain part of the cost. So I unwillingly gave them the money to get my ********** car away from thier greedy hands.
And then when I got home ( about 6 or 7 miles estimated) I had smoke barreling out of the hood.
I popped the hood and it smelled like a mix of antifreeze/water.
Does this happen because they flushed the radiator?
They said it took an hour to install the thermostat! ($83 including labor) Did I get gyped ?

Heres what my bill came to;

Job01 Cooling System: $568.99
1. replace water pump and all o-rings and gaskets.
2. replace thermostat and gasket.
3. refill cooling system with proper ammount
of antifreeze.

Job02 Under Drive Pulleys: $67.00

Job03 Thermostat: $83.98
------------------------------------------
total : $464.07

DID I GET SCREWED OR IS THIS NORMAL FOR A SHO ??

Getting screwed is normal for owning a SHO. So going by shop rates and dealer prices, no you got what everyone else would get.

Now if you did it yourself...-> about $50.

No... I think the KY was an extra 50$ not including labor.

If I knew what I was doing, I would have done it myself. But I dont know what i was doing and its really cold out and I am a wuss when it comes to doing stuff out in the cold. ( I'd rather be indoors with my beer ). Plus I dont have the proper tools to do such thing and I would most likely F#CK something up and I would have kicked my own A$$ for trying to do it by myself and then I would have an even heftier bill to pay.

BTW are there any shops in/near Nebraska that know how to work on a SHO with decent prices as far as labor?? I'm willing to drive out of state but not to like Colorado or anything because my car will probably break down before i get there.
I need a 60k pretty bad.

Thanks for listening to my *******.. it calmed me down alot. thumbs_u

Nebraska is a rather large area. How about Al Fitzgerald? Not sure about labor rates, but I know he's a... Nebraskarainian? :D

You got screwed more than any other single SHO owner i have EVER seen. They completely ripped you off.I`d ask for a break down of the labor work. You overpaid by almost 100%

It kills me how some of this mechanics try and screw you at every turn. I've been lucky that I have found some really fair and honest mechanics over the years. These guys just ruin it for the honest ones out there.

Actually, he's a former Bostonian! wink In any case, he's located in Grand Island, NE which is pretty central to the state. I'm not sure if he services SHO's outside his own couple of dozen (!), but he's a good guy and it wouldn't hurt to ask. At the very least he can probably point you towards a competent SHO mechanic.

BTW, if you do pay him a visit, there's a great gin joint near the airport called Whiskey Creek! :)

Uh,... did your UDP's come with both the accessories drive belt AND timing belt? If not, then you're going to have to go in there again for the timing belt when you do your 60K, or when the timing belt breaks, whichever comes first.

[QB]...and that was because I had a powertrain warranty (so the thermostat was not included) that would cover 1/2 of the price of the water pump.
You thought that was bad? 1 Thousand dollars for blowing some wheel bearings badly and requiring a new spindle on my 93 ford tempo v6 w 100K+ . Yes folks, that's just about what the car is worth. These guys are too rough to use ky jelly. I've used the shop before for a/c and a radiator which are still working after over 2 years. It's probably because of the holidays. The dude probably has a family and needs some extra money or something for presents and stuff.

My thoughts on the issue are it could be done in no more than a day or two including the time it takes to yank it from a pick and pull. It's the price you pay for not doing the work yourself. Certain parental circumstances have forbidden me to work on a car for a while due to my 60 days for 60k project in the garage. Thanks guys. Doing that job would have been good practice for the sho. I can't be too mad since my mom said she would pay for it because she doesnt' want it being worked on at the house. Getting the right parts, more specifically engine stuff, can be a PITA for the sho !

I dont' know what that other dude is saying about the cost being outrageous. I got a waterpump at a decent price with a 60k package deal from SP motorsports but I think 200 or more is a going rate for them now. I know they've been discontinued. The tstat is easy to replace but the water pump takes some work to get to. That bill is reasonable for the work done in my opinion. At a specialty shop you would have had to cough up a grand but they would have done the timing belt, crank sensor & seal, a proper coolant flush, and maybe some other stuff.

Smoke and antifreeze fumes from a freshly repaired car at a shop? A trained mechanic doing shoddy work? No.. it couldn't be. I fear taking my car to places to do anything to my sho. I fear losing reverse or other transmission damage for not listening to me when I say and write, "first before reverse". I fear shops for tires and alignments. I have some nice marks on my white rims from them putting the new tires on.

The sho is like a girlfriend. When you have problems with her you figure them out and fix them yourself, in a most careful and passionate fassion according to the helms bible.

reman water pump: $45 1 hour
T-stat: $20 .25 hours
Gasket: $.98

Go to a dealer, and ask them to look up the labor for the above said work. Get that in writing, and go back to the shop with demands.

Yea, you got reamed pretty good. They definately saw you coming. Anymore, I insist on an estimate first, then I compare. The law states that if they go over 10% of the estimate, they have to get your OK first. I have a good relationship with most shops around here, but I had to have the battery on my SHO replaced under warranty. I went to the shop that I worked in for a year. Since the battery was under warranty, how much could it cost? Well, not including the price of the time used on the battery, they charged me over $50.00 to change it. Last time I will ever do business with them.
Live and learn.
