Does anyone know if 3M has made a clear film protector for our new 2011 Taurus yet. I want to avoid stone chips on the front end ASAP

3M makes the tape. Your installer downloads the templates and custom cuts them at their shop. And if there is no template, a good installer can make it for you anyway...

How the **** do you cut the film without a template? Whether he puts it up to the car or uses a program, you're referencing something. A REAL installer has a roll of film, a good computer and an expensive cutter. And he does it more quickly then cutting it out of thin air.

A real installer has done my various cars numerous times. A real installer has done a very professional job for me. A real installer has done it for a great price, too, since he doesn't take forever to cut it out of thin air and can do more vehicles in a day...

Not to mention it avoids scratches in your glass from having an installer trim it on the outside of your car. Not sure if I'm even going to tint mine yet when it comes in this week although the dealer has their own installers that work on site and use Llumar film.

No. A REAL installer that is experienced needs no template to cut from. He lays the film on and cuts it with a blade. He does not need anyone to cut it for him.

Ok it sounds like I can get it done somewhere. Now to search my area for a good insaller.

On our GT forum many guys have had disasters and some great jobs. So I guess the best is to find a good installer. :thankyou:

Then hopefully your installer was a wiz at Operation. Because my installer didn't waste time risking hurting the car, had his computer bring up the proper template, his cutter cut the pattern and then had it on the car in less time and got more done. And with precision. That's great if your REAL installer did it another way. Personally, I don't care about YOUR real installer.

That's the great thing about these new SHO owners. Some will be as douchey and pompous as many of the Cadillac guys...

Not douchey at all. If your installer is so great he should be able to do it by himself, and not have someone have to cut it for him.

I am a installer and I install paint protective film using both methods. The thing that I hate is that the great template that bigjim was talking about aren't always the best they can be generic and not always fit right. In the long run trying to fix the templetes are a waste of time. So I make my own templates and cut them on the plotter and there is little or no trimming done on the car. The car can be done and I have done hundereds of vehicles and if there is no template they can be made by the installer, just make sure the shop backs there work and there is a warranty on the film.

The only thing I hate about this , is that with some time (many years) it dulls and looks like crap afterwards. I would buy bug shields before that , at least its alot easier to replace.

i like the precut template, much more accurate lookign, there is no way on some of them odd angles and turns your are going to be exact on both side without a template. i don't care how good you are.

my tinter uses templates now too, they can still do it old school as they had to do it on my SHO as there were no templates out yet,

for a bra, template FTW

I have done so many custom vehicles from motorhomes, bikes, full custom simi truck I even did his frame and bottom of trailer, Factory Five custom kit car, cars, trucks, back of a boat where the swim platform meets. The material has a warranty that protects from dulling, yellowing, if it ever does it have it replaced. All of my cars have it and I have never had a problem. It is much nicer because it blends in and doesn't stick out like a bug sheild does. You can never tell between a template and custom job if the person knows what he is doing, and has done it for many years, you can never tell.

I had to have my '04 CTS-V custom done because it was so new. And it took about 5 hours. Other cars I've had done with a computer cutter and it took much less time. So why not as long as the template is accurate?

Template is good. I've had both my V and SHO done and both were computer cut. Trust me, the last thing you want to see is a guy going on your paint with an exacto knife trying to cut the film.

Template is clean and fits the front end like a glove!
