My transmission died on Monday and I had to limp the car home for about 40 miles in the shoulder of the expressway during rush hour. The car would not do no more than 30mph @ 4000rpms. I call FPS an they quoted me $2695 for the transmission(reman.)and $600 to install it. I would like to know what some of you guys have paid for your trans when it decided to dump on ya!!!!!!!!!!

I paid just over $2000.00 for a partial rebuild and new torque converter but I had to return it to them twice over three months and it still isn't right. (See thread, "What would you do?")

Paid $1,300 the first time last year then another $600 for another valve body since they didn't think they should honor their work considering my little engine modification. Now the TC is on it's way out too.
Next one is a SHOFast unit!

On ebay their is a company called Phoenix Transmissions that according to them is reputable and they had the regular AXOD for my car going at $6-700 plus $100 shipping. Their facility if thats theirs looks huge and they supposedly test everything out at the Dyno before being shipped to you. Why don't you give them a call?

Heres the auction for your transaxle. AX4N right?

I drove a 1000 miles for FPS to put one in. You won't regret it if you do. At least it close to home:) They're the best and will set it up the way you want it. Might as well have them weld the cams too.

Yeap, FPS(Doug&Bob)right here in good ole Douglasville, GA. are the one that I am talking about. Uhm $150.00 in parts and your own labor that sounds interesting. What exactly did you do to get your AX4N back up anad running. I am definitely a DIY'er. Before the car ATX quit on me, it would definitely redline before even if I did a moderate take off. And anytime I came to a stop, it would start jerking as if it were going in and out of first gear. Once she got pass first gear it was smooth sailing. If their are any details that any of the DIY'ers can supply it would be greatly appreciated. I definitely think that I have the tools for the job. Just in need of some good insight and a good GEN 3 manual. Thanks A Million Guys frown

with the new style "E" trannys, a rebuilt will never ever last as long as a new one. There are to many over looked parts that are NOT normally replaced, My first tranny broke the converter in half. This time its whineing, I removed the valve body today and will inspect it (or rather the tranny guy will) tomorrow, after doing alot of research I found that the trannys suck. there are updated parts for every single peice in the transmission, most of the updates are not for improved shifting but fixing a poorly designed transmission.

I did what everybody does for a rebuild, a normal hard part kit, bands, clutches, and steels with a Transgo (shift improver kit). I was the first to use kevlar clutches, Kolene steels, and High energy bands (all my chioce) with the transgo kit, I also had the first converter welded (frunace brazed). Way more work than an FPS tranny ever would have done as a FPS tranny, but if the stator support warrning came across a bit sooner I could have corrected the problem before it broke. (this is the suspected reason for all the recent tranny failures) Now they are coming out the door left and right From Ford and other vendors as they feel fit to release the info. Regular trans personnel can only fix what they have bullitens on. Again a new bulliten about the relief valve (pressure valve) is wearing its self into the bore of the AL throttle body. At this time I dont want to reveal my sources about this info because it seems my Tranny info has its way of being ripped off. After I have ALL the little stupid problems fixed I will post and exact detail of what needs to be done so you can take it to your tranny person and have it done while its on the bench.

NOTE*** after noticeing the pressure problem I am alos changing out the EPC solenoid, even though it is nbot part of a standard rebuild its just something that could go wrong or fail because of the high line pressure I have been dealt with this time. OBTW.. the trans go does not touch line pressure so thats out of the equasion incase anyone was pointing that way.

Note2*** the Valve body can come out with the trans still in the car, it took us about 2 hrs to get to it and get it removed. But it can be done. also noticed that a Exhaust manifold nut (manifold to the head) came off and is MIA.

Back to the Tranny shop to Glassbead the cover and make it all pretty, and to reinforce the rear mount. after looking real good at it, it wont be as strong as the reinforced MTX mounts that I have made up but I think it will be ok. a good mod to do when the tranny is out as well.

Also talking with Energy about some urethane motor/tranny mounts.

Ryan D, talk to your guy about the valve body pistons, tell him its doing the same as the AOD 1-2 accumlator piston. See if he is aware of this yet.

Well, if anyone needs a good 94' AXOD-E I have one that needs a home. Shifts great and does not slip.

I recently had Doug take my Gen 2 tranny all apart to see if anything looked worn. The only parts that were partially compromised were the overdrive bands. I guess I really need to take it out of overdrive before I MASH it..hehe My engine makes a whole lot more power then when it was stock to the wheels and my $2200 FPS rebuild has lasted so far. If you live in Douglasville and don't want to hassle with your tranny anymore I would make an appointment with Doug. He has experience with them. I learned very quickly that you cannot nickel and dime performance. In the long run, it pays to do it right the first time.

Now, we will see what a LSD and a much higher stall speed converter will contribute.

For my rebuild, the only part that NEEDED to be replaced was the torque converter ($100, I got one **** of a deal, usually ~$250). We took the entire tranny apart, replaced all the normal hard parts cleaned the valve body, put in a Trans-go kit ($50), reassembled and reinstalled. I live outside of Detroit and my receptionists husband works in the plant where the AX4N is built as a defect analysis tech. My hard parts managed to find their way into my posession at a VERY (stress VERY) reasonable price ;o) You'll find that the usual rebuild kit for the tranny costs somewhere in the $300 range.
Its definitely doable for a competent mechanic even without the aid of someone that rebuilds this tranny 3 or 4 times daily as I was lucky enough to have at my disposal free of charge.
Someone that deals exclusively in the AX4N modular motor application can remove the tranny in less than an hour. For normal people, allot an afternoon of your time if not more for each the removal and reinstallation.
Good luck if you decide to tackle the project on your own. There is really no reason that you couldn't accomplish the entire thing for under $1000 on your own (well, with the help of some friends for the labor, thus the water, Gatorade and sandwiches).

Now that's downright scary. My first rebuild (July 14th, 2000) was done because my Torque converter broke into two pieces and started shooting shards of metal into my transmission. As if that's not weird enough, my current AX4N is beginning to whine. Maybe our cars are on the same wavelength. :p
