I had the car died when driving last Friday, as http://dwww.shoforum.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic=03;f=17;t=009740#000000 Link here</a>.

Tonight, when I drove down a sharp hill, the speed is about 65MPH, I shift from "D" to "2" to prevent too fast and too hard break, had done that no problem with Crown Victoria. The car slow down to about 45PMH. Then check engine light on, I shifted back to "D", and add a little bit gas tried to back to 55MPH. The car died at that moment and had to move to left turn lane to prevent hit by car behind. Started right away immediately after stop> park > turn on the key.

Check the code. same as previous, 157, 332, 648.

Is code 648--4th gear ratio error can creat this problem? When I changed the tranny filter in last summer, I feeled the filter was not tie enough but did not think too much at that time. Could a loose and dropped filter in the pan create this problem too? (also, I decide to change the filter this weekend, just in case)

Any thought will be really appreciate.

Recently, I felt the RMP after 60MPH is little bit highter than before. 70PMH at about 3.5RMPx1000, previously was 2.8. I just reset the idle tonight using Scott's procedure, and took a drive up to high way 30 minutes ago.

Here is what happened. When the car speed above 75 and around 4RMPx1000, the car died when driving. Of course, emergency again!!! Tried again on return round, same thing--when speed at about 80, 4.5RMPx1000, it died again. Low speed and low RMP seems no problem.

Double check the code just now. Now is 332, and 648.

Does this point to tranny failure?

When the engine died, did the tach drop immediately to zero even though the engine was still spinning as the car slowed down? That would point to the crankshaft position sensor (CPS). I can't imaging the transaxle error affecting the engine's ignition system.

The 332 code indicates that either the EGR "nostrils" inside the intake are clogged, the DPFE is not properly coupled to the EGR tube or the EGR valve is not working. My bet would be the plugged nostrils.

The 157 code can be generated if you unplug the MAF sensor with the ignition key on. Since it didn't repeat, I would keep an eye on it, but concentrate on the engine cut out problem first.

When the car died, I knew from the battery light on and steering hard to turn. At that momment, scaping from the road is only thing in my mind. Not remember if tach dropped to 0, but will next time. I am wondering if the CPS is not good, how it could be no code with engine running, even check engine light on and off? Those two codes are from engine off key on test!

Seems have to sit SHO there until I could figure out something.

Is your car idling strangely too?
Starting problems?

I'd check the IAC solenoid as well. Makes the car stall out at speed if bad. It may not throw a code.
Also the MAF might be dirty or bad, because when you downshift, the engine revs up and gasps for more air. Dirty MAF's may not sense this air change properly resulting in a starved engine. (BTW, I hope you are taching it up or bliping the throttle before you downshift)

I am now questioning the IAC too. Ordering a new one to replce it anyway. Will also clean the MAF in the meantime.

By the way, what you mean "..taching it up or bliping the throttle before you downshift?

Thanks

This is an old thread but just want to update my side in case anyone else will have the same problem.

The answer for the problem is Air Idle Control. After changing the part, everything is running good then.

There was no code for the problem. This might give you another clue if car dies when driving.
