My 2010 SHO has just hit 26,000 miles in 8 months. I guess that makes me a “power” user of this car. I have read posts that have complained about quality issues. I really haven’t had anything to gripe about, so I guess I’m lucky. Karma has taken my good fortune with the SHO and given me a lemon BMW 535i, so I guess everything evens out. Since I’m in sales, I pretty much live in the car. I wanted to share with the forum my likes and dislikes so far and see if they are consistent with what others are experiencing.
LIKES: (in no order)
• The engine. POWER for a large car is great. I added the Airaid CAI and it made it even better. I love blowing away cars that think it is “just” a Taurus”.
• Seats. Long drives are no problem and I’m 6’5” and 235. I think the interior is better that my old 7 series.
• GPS. Great system and with Travel Link it is a wonderful tool to use.
• Looks. On its own it turns heads. I just wish it didn’t look so much like the other Taurus cars out there. However, the “stealth” factor is there.
• Fit and Finish. I haven’t had issues (yet) with the peeling chrome trim. The paint is very good and stands up well. The first winter is the real test.
• Interior finish. Not one rattle or squeak. The car is “Lexus” quiet.
• Bluetooth system. My customers tell me the sound is very good and it is almost like a land line. I have a fairly technical job (surgical device sales) and I get calls where clarity is important.
• AWD. First few snow have been no problem. Autoweek even rated the SHO as a top 10 Snow car.
• Trunk. You can play tennis back there! With spectators!
• MPG.
• Back up camera and side warning. Ever been in a hospital parking garage full of Buicks being driven by 80 year olds? Very helpful!
• BLIS. Minor issues with rails, but then I know they are there to begin with.
• Handling. OK the car can wallow in the turns, but it is as big as the USS Missouri! Let’s face it, she goes well in a straight line but it isn’t a Porsche! Yet, the SHO gets around pretty well.
• Paddle Shifters. Again this isn’t a sports car. And I know some prefer the up and down on opposite sides. In heavy city traffic, I always shift to M and get the turbos spooled up before I shoot the gaps in traffic.
Dislikes: (in no order)
• SYNC or SINK. This sucks. The worst part of the car is this joke that Microsoft sold Ford. Just like most MS products, it wasn’t ready for prime time but they launched it anyway. I have been through the entire manual and web site and done everything possible to get it to work. I guess I just don’t have the right tone for the system. I want to tear that logo off my console!
• Auto dim lights. Why! It doesn’t work well and I have to spend time manually adjusting the lights on my own.
• Auto Transmission. Great engine with the Auto trans from a 1985 Olds.
• Rain sensing wipers. I’ve had three BMW’s with this feature and now the SHO. NONE of them worked. Again, I have to intervene so what’s the point.
• Carpet. Ford couldn’t have found anything cheaper or installed it any worse.
• Brakes. Really! 20” rims with this tiny rotor. My kid’s bike has bigger brakes. Nice backorder on the TSB. For a FAST and HEAVY car the brakes are a major liability. If I did rank my dislikes, the brakes would be #1 along with SINK. They are wretched.
• Engine bay. What makes this a SHO? Why that would be the ENGINE! When you pop the hood it looks like a plastic factory exploded. No cool looking metal engine parts at all. And when you take the cover off, it looks like the plumbing aisle at Home Depot.
• Interior Storage. The center console can hold a pen and $1.50 in change. Ford should have looked at the F-150 on how to maximize interior storage. This is my “office” and the car has the room to give to a better designed interior.
No car is perfect. At this point I’m VERY happy to be driving this car. I’m also done with the overpriced Eurocrap. Our lease on our BMW is done in 3 months, and I’ll never drive another one. It is sad when you know the service manager’s phone number better than your own. FORD is back and Americans need to support our auto industry or it will be like most other things we buy “made in China”. Thanks for the Forum. I really learn a great deal and think this empowers the consumer . Let me know your thoughts.
By the way, Happy Holidays from Central Ohio to everyone on this forum. And a very happy 2011!
