Newbie here looking to buy his first SHO.

Two possible candidates are as follows: 2016 w/ 85,000 miles, or a 2019 with about 1/3 the mileage. But it is almost 2X the cost of the 2016.

With the 2016, I know to budget some $$$ to replace the water pump, cam phasers, etc., soon.

Both cars have the Performance Package option. Will the 2019 have a better PTU than the 2016?

I plan on adding performance options to my car (exhaust, high flow air filter, mild tune, etc.) - should that influence which car to choose?

Assume the cars are optioned equally, as well as their condition. I've yet to see either in person; I hope to next week.

Any tips or guidance will be appreciated. Thanks!

The 2016 may have the sync 2 system still, the 2019 DEFINITELY has the sync 3 system

Also, performance package, not worth it if you drive around a lot, its mostly just parts and a traction control button, which you can add all that later
The driver assist package is better if your going to daily drive it, that includes auto parallel parking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep system, and front collision warning

In these cars I would want the fewest miles. I’d take a ‘14 with less miles than an ‘18… for example. Without explicit service records of regular oil and especially PTU fluid changes I wouldn’t gamble on one with over 40K.

Then know ALL fluids must be changed by you for a starting point and be continued on with regular intervals.

If both are PP cars there is no difference in PTU.

Good luck whatever you decide.

My '14 qualifies woo-hoo - not selling mine though.

I would get the 2019.

Also this should answer quite a bit of your questions.

They also deleted the power adjust steering so it probably dont have an easy entry/exit mode

Mileage means nothing to me as long as it's maintained. The 2019 is getting near age replacement on many of the parts the 16 needs so it's kinda a wash imo.
I agree completely. You and I got back in with well known cars. I just bought into 113K. I’d take that before one with 60K I knew nothing about.

Service records are definitely important, if I were in your position I'd lean toward the 16 provided the records are there, the money saved will help you with inevitable repairs like the water pump and you can also do the upgrade to sync 3 from what ive seen relatively cheap and easy if thats important to you. average cost Ive seen on a water pump done at a shop is 3-4k and the sync 3 can be done for <$500, throw in a tune up with a few bolt on goodies and you aught to have a trouble free car with the important bits taken care of for under 5k. neither car is "new" even the 19 is 5 years old and these cars demand regular service on several parts so its all about a good foundation. guessing at figures if the 16 is 18k and the 19 is 32k then investing 5k into the 16 brings your investment to 23k which is a lot of peace of mind and a savings of 9 grand. just my opinion, good luck with buying your SHO!

That’s too many logical maths.

I like the walk thru, when in the emotional state of buying something, we short circuit logic.

For instance, I have a DD - Scion Tc I have kept from 2010, I promise this relates to this buying decision.

I could sell my car with blow-by for couple of grand, maybe 3K. And buy someone's inflation priced $6k Honda or similar...

OR buy and pay to replace my engine with a reman with 7 year warranty on engine - spend the same $6000 to install and replace on a car with no rust - southern clean, salt free living, or buy another persons poorly maintained car. Same logical calculations. Same with me - I start looking at all sorts of cars - they are going mostly in good shape low miles really like $10K+ with 70k+ miles. I got wrapped up in the emotion of buy used and replace mine, just not worth it in the end for a car I maintained and know its history.

Just some food for thought.

Well, once again, I'm a victim of my own procrastination. The 2016 w/ 85K miles was sold yesterday - or at least the listing is no longer there. It was a one owner that had its oil changed about every 10K miles.

The 2019 with low mileage is just too pricey for me right now. A low mileage 2018 is now available, but also too pricey.

I need a second four door sedan like I need a hole in my head, so I will continue to wait for another opportunity.

Thanks for all the input posted in this thread.

Good luck in the future.
You dodged a bullet. Hahaha
I don't think so. Just a missed opportunity. And there will be others, sooner than later.

While I think the typical buyer of a new SHO is a bit more in tune with the car, on average, their care of it is more along the lines of a typical car buyer. Hence my belief that a one owner car with 80K miles and oil changes every 10K miles is not one to avoid. I take good care of my vehicles. But I don't change the oil every 3K miles, send out samples for analysis with every change, or get bent out of shape if I go three months between total detailed cleanings and application of a ceramic coating. It's just a Taurus, not a Ford GT.

A car enthusiast is what this sleeper car community is about. Many of us are enthusiasts, thus we are where you go for proper advice for this platform. So the alarm for buying this car with all its potential high maintenance issues is why we are cautious in our advice.

However as u said, it's a Taurus, listen to us or not....

I'll agree that there's enthusiasts that buy these cars and appreciate their sometimes overwhelming maintenance schedule and tend to the needs of their car as if it were their child. And then there are buyers that like the concept but could be just as at home in an audi and view this platform as just another car. As an enthusiast from an investment standpoint I can see these platforms are problematic and expensive to repair unless the somewhat expensive and rigorous maintenance schedule is maintained. That's why we offer up the advice we do because it's a deep rabbit hole if you buy someone else's neglected SHO and end up with problem after problem. The best advice no matter what the cars history is to be ready to tackle the issues and stay ahead of them or it will let you down, unfortunately it's not just a Taurus, it's a specialty vehicle that requires more attention than others to be reliable. Hence a lot of people on this forum don't daily drive these cars.
