The miles are not a problem IF the car has been maintained and it's mostly highway miles (i.e., not used as a rental or livery service). The mechanicals are stout, but people can sometimes not give them the care they need before selling them on. Maintenance records would be a big priority.

I believe you can get these 2011 cars now in the range of $15,000 or so (+ taxes/fees), and buy a Ford warranty too (online, extra) if you want.

in our part of the world, between $15k and $19k depending on how nice and exactly what equipment it has.

It would be to me. I would insist on provable maintenance during that period. There are good reasons why Carfax may not know including DIY, shops that don't report to Carfax, etc. But it makes your due diligence that much more important.

Thanks SHOdded,
I was concerned about the miles... I value your opinion. Carfax shows 18000+ miles a year so they must be highway????

I would hope. But you should ask the seller if they know whether or not the car was used for taxi or delivery service. You can rack up a lot of hard miles doing that. So the car could be older inside than it looks outside. Ultimately, if you have asked your questions, driven the vehicle, checked the engine bay/underbody, the only extra you could ask for is to have the car inspected by a knowledgeable mechanic prior to purchase (or with a 30 day no hassle buyback/return). May not pay the lowest price, but you would be making a solid purchase.

Some people are even maniacal enough to bring a paint meter with them to discover paint defects and areas where the body has been repaired/repainted. So don't feel bad about asking questions of the seller!

Carfax shows no maintenance records until 40,000 miles. Is that a red flag?

not at all, in my opinion. lots of dealers do not report to that database simply because it is too easy to mis-type the miles, and then the CarFax is screwed up and its a pain to fix.

you don't need a paint meter - all you need is one of those cheap refrigerator magnets that all the realtors/insurance agents/pizza places send you. they have enough strength to stick through paint, but not enough to stick if there is any bondo there.

the miles may or may not be a problem. of all the EcoBoost vehicles we have seen at work, only one needed turbos replaced at around 100k. it appeared to be due to lack of oil changes and/or poor quality oil being used. that is the only turbo issue of which I am aware.

Did the 011 SHO come with remote start?
It was an option. Separate FOB and it sucked. When you went to the car after remote starting it and opened the door the engine shut off. You had to restart once you got in the car.

Haven't tried it on my '13, and don't care too. One less thing you don't need to worry about while driving. They already got to much extra crap in them now, causing distracted drivers.
