1st Oil change

Took the 2010 SHO to a local oil change place to get the oil changed. I use my own oil (Amsoil 0w30), and filter. In the past this place would charge me $15.00 for the work.

I drive in with the SHO, and the guy says this car needs a special oil :confused: which I don't have. I told him I have my own oil, and filter. He tells me it will be $15.00 for the oil change, and $15.00 to remove the skid plate. He said there are pins that break, there are six of them, and it's a real complicated sysyem,:confused: he said you're better off going to the dealer.:rainshit:

I decided to do the oil change myself, and see what all the fuss was about (skid plate). There is a large plastic skid plate covering the engine block area. There are four (4) twist lock type bolts that hold the skid plate on. I was able to loosen them by hand (seems to be a secure system), and remove the skid plate. It took approximately 30 seconds to remove the plate! And about 45 seconds to re-install it!
The oil change went smooth. Drain plug, and oil filter were easily accessible.
Don't let anyone rip you off, regarding the skid plate.

If something ever went wrong with that motor it would void the warranty, just a little heads up.

if I were Ford, and your engine blew up, and I figured out you weren't using the kind of oil I told you to, I would not cover your warranty. And I'm a nice guy. Sounds a lot like russian roulette to me.

You would be correct, that would be their excuse, but they more than likely would not know about it even if he left the heavier oil in it.

I use Motorcraft 5W20 and FL820S on all my vehicles, when the SHO gets here, I'll be using 5W20 and the FL500S.

I'd use what the factory recomends for viscosity but that's just me.

Same here, until I found out more about the engine's oil passages, pump capacity, bearing galley depths etc etc. This is why I run 40 wt oil in my sho's and sometimes they see up to 50 weight, the system can handle it and it protects the engine more. Granted it loses some power to the wheels and such but I'd rather keep my engine alive and well.

...will be useless if your engine fails, and it even remotely looks like it was lubrication related. Don't believe me? Ask all the WRX and STi owners who got dicked over by Subaru who had their transaxle warranties voided over something silly like a CAI or a charge cooling kit. While you're crying M&M act, your car is going to sit in a service bay until you pony up the 5 figures to replace the engine.

If you use 0w30, and you break an axle, then it's a different story.

No one is trying to start an argument, but none of us want to see a post about a cooked motor and a voided warranty.

1st off, didn't your Ford dealer tell you about the $10.00 oil changes for just buying the new SHO?? Mine did, and they told me I could have any of my vehicles done for the same price. And when you have 6 vehicles like my wife and I do, that's pretty damn cheap. Be it, it is Ford oil, not Amsoil though.
2nd, the Ford engineers design the motors to be used with a certain type of oil, and that is the 5W20. The tolerance levels for the vast parts in the motor need a certain amount/type of oil to flow throughout its internals, maybe the 0W30 can meet the requirements, maybe it can't. It also depends on where you live, climate wise also. I'm no oil specialist by far, but with the way testing is done now, they can send off the oil for analysis and pretty much narrow down what happened if a problem occurs. I don't think myself or anyone else on here is going to argue with you, tell you what to do, etc. but please be careful. None of us want you to hurt your car that you spent damn good money on bro, that's all. Hopefully, nothing will ever happen and you'll be rocking the car for a right good while.

The only reason ford says to use 5w20 is for emissions I would never run that thin of an oil in any car. But that is my opinion.
