so I was pondering the idea of buying a project car. I found a 99 they said it spun a cam gear. I asked if the engine was totaly shot they said theres not any damage to the pistons.. Will I have to replace the whole engine? Or possibly get this one rebuilt?

You will have to replace that head with a known good one, and have the camshafts welded. A good inspection of the other cams should be done to make sure they have not moved.

The pistons may be ok, but if the cam did go, then the valve faces and pistons did hit.

You can reuse the head bolts (despite their Torque to Yield spec) and head gaskets.

Good luck, I love my Silver Frost 99.

well i will give you my story some

i have used 2 cam failed motors in my car one was the motor that came with the car the other was one i bought off of midnightauto!

both of thos had under a 100k when they failed

both had gotten a rod knock after 4-5k in miles, i think it has somthing to do with when the pistons hit the valves the only weak point is a rod bearing besides the valves bending! the first one bent a rod!

i will say you cant find parts to rebuild them and if you do you could buy a short block off ebay for 500$ shipped pretty much!

Hmmm....

On a bit of a tangent, I sold my '99 (back in late '01) to an acquaintance in Louisville (I used to live there). As of a year after that, he never had it welded. If the front bumper looks repainted, if there's some tiny brown specs around the antenna, and it has a porterized intake ( Porterized Intake #1!!), it could be my old car. If so, it's a shame. That was a quick '99 (first Gen 3 to run in the 14s).

ah this one is white... so what would you suggest? try to rebuild that motor? or try and find another one?

If you are looking for a car to drive, go find another one.

if you want a project, either rebuilding the engine or finding another engine (that will need to be welded) are options.

i fixed one

Im a ford tech , and i repaired a 98 sho at work a while back that spun a cam gear. I replaced the camshaft, replaced the bent valves, and put it back together. its still running perfect 10,000 miles later.no damage to the head was done, just a couple of bent valves. when i did the repair, though, the parts were still available from ford.
