Took a 1 hour drive today and on the way back the trans slipped a few times in low gears... I wanted to get it into a resident parking spot so I tried to make it around the block but after stopping at a stop light it would not shift back into gear in Drive 1, 2, or 3 but it will go into Reverse... I had to push it across the intersection into a 3 hour parking spot.... luckily it can sit there overnight if I wake up early and feed the meter..... when I popped the hood there was a little smoke coming out and had an overheating type smell.. but I always monitor the engine temp which was Normal .. otherwise I couldn't find any other visual clues but I am I correct in my assumption that the trans is gone?

Thank you for your reply.... I actually got out there this morning and gave it a try and it went right into gear... I just pulled it up a few spots to test it... is this normal for a failing trans or is this something else to suspect? Because I am ready to swap the transmission if that is indeed the issue I just want to be sure.. thanks

Thanks for the replies! As expected the problem almost immediately came back... Well anyway I found a used trans to throw in so I will get to work on that tomorrow... hopefully I have better luck with this one... My car has 112,000 miles the used trans I found has 87,000 on it.

I just picked up a '97 for $1000 with trans slipping in 3rd. Only did it when it was cold and you give it too much throttle. Slipped really bad when I went for test drive but stopped slipping the day after I bought it. That was a month ago and it started slipping again 3 days ago even when warm. I put some LUCAS transmission fix in it 2 days ago and it's much better (it'll take time for the lucas to soften up the seals).

Check your trans fluid to see if it is burnt (dark red/brown) if it looks good, it is the seals in the trans that are the problem ans not the clutches and the LUCS might help:salute:

Just wanted to come back to confirm that the used trans has been installed and the car is running again.

Mine had similar problems, but my problem was the throttle positioning sensor mine would down shift and wouldnt shit any more and the sensor solved the problem
