1993 SHO ATX Shift Comparisons

Just wanting to know how everyone else's SHO with an ATX shifts. Does everyones ATX shift from 1st to 2nd gear OK? And manually shifting it under power at 5 grand to red line is there any delay? Last night coming home from work I was playing around some and mine does have a delay. When it does go into 2nd gear there is a delay and then the tires make a slight chirp, which I like. We all know that last week I paid Certified Transmission $2,100.00 for a newly re-built AX4S from their factory in Omaha. They told me if they replaced it with another that the other one would probably do the same. This is my 3rd SHO over the years with the first one being an ATX. I never recalled a delayed shift from 1st to 2nd gear. Certified ordered a part for it last Friday and they told me it bolts to the outside of the transmission and it increases the pressure throughout all the shift points. Any ideas as to what they are talking about? Anyone else have this mod? I think it could be a band aide fix.

Should I make them replace the entire Transmission again? Driving like an old lady it does great and it runs really well. They told me the engine outruns the transmission. Open to suggestions and comments as to how other ATX's shift and if they snap your head back from 1st to 2nd gear as mine does not. How should it shift, been so long since my first ATX SHO that I can't remember.

with mine there is about a sec. delay if i shift manually. if i leave it in drive itll run to about 6900 rpm and shift. my shifts are soft as low speeds, but when getting on it they are pretty snappy, but not really hard. check it out if youd like.

Your biggest problem is the lack of a 3rd pedal. Why get an auto if you like shifting gears? I always thought it was kinda ******* an ATX when u do that. Who know's.. I'm an atx noob.

To be honest, it would help if you had two things:
1. A solid front motor mount...I make one that bolts into the factory mounting points.
2. And most importantly, a tweecer. If you want your tranny to last and get snappy shifts the tweecer is the way to go. You can get an LPM, but you will enjoy a tweecer more.

I watched the video and was reminded how slow the stock shifts are. If you want a little better shifts swap in 94 PCM (D4U1). That would help just a little but like I said the real way to get the shifts you want is to tune it. If your gonna do that you mines as well get rid of the factory lines and run to and from a cooler bypassing the radiator end-tank. It can be done though, my 94, fairly consistantly, chirps into 2nd.

Certified got the part in today. I asked them what it was and after transferring the call a guy there told me it was a "Line Riser" resistor. It was to increase the pressure to the transmission. I remember now last year when I got the car. When it hit 2nd gear it would want to **** my steering wheel out of my hands almost. After replacing the spark plugs it seemed to mellow out somewhat. So much for the high dollar plugs. Think I'll use Motocraft of autolite next time.

Anyone heard of this? Appointment for Tuesday to install it and it will take a couple of hours they claim.

Sucks having to back off to shift as it is so ******* the clutch pack this way. If this doesn't fix it I am going to another Certified Transmission store up north and have them test drive it and see what they say. Not going to tell them that it was just replaced and see if they say it is bad.

After talking to A&Reds Transmission parts they told me to have it scanned. I called Certified up north and told them of my problems and they got me to tell them who replaced it and what location. He sounded like he freaked out on the phone when I told him that someone who replaced it wanted to put a line riser on it. Then he found out it was another Certified Transmission location. I have an appointment Thursday morning to have them look at it for a 2nd opinion. I hope that they will not call the other store as they will be PO'ed if they found out that I went behind their back maybe? The original location's Service Adviser sounded really snotty on the phone when I asked him just what part they had ordered and what part was being replaced, so screw them. I'll have another location troubleshoot it and /or replace it.

If they would of paid $2,100.00 for something that doesn't work I bet they would want it to shift right.

The original location told me to drive it lightly and let it shift itself at 20mph or so. It's a SHO and it doesn't come on until 4,500 rpm or so. Give me a break...LOL

Your shifting problems are probably related to whether or not a "shift correction" kit was installed when the trans was rebuilt. I had a Superior Shift Correction Package installed and my 95 shifts crisp and clean between all gears. I think a "kit" is a must in any rebuild. Also, the solid front motor mount is a worthwhile investment too.

I had another Certified look at it and drive it. They agreed gassing it it does have some delay. On the way home twice I was able to get on it some from 1st to 2nd gear and it had what seemed to bee a normal delay of a second or so. Not sure if I want this Line riser resistor installed or not now Tuesday. The other store said Certified in Omaha rebuilds the solenoids EPC's could be a problem sometimes. They said usually it is hard shifts though. rubydist on here said it took almost 1,000 miles before his ATX started to shift right. He thought it was the result of tight seals. He may be right. We'll see and thanks for the input

On the way home from work tonight a Dodge magnum was wanting to race me at the stop lights. I kept my car just a nose ahead of him as he was accelerating until my secondaries opened up. Then it was game over I pulled him big time. My Certified transmission did not want to go int 2nd gear at 7,000rpm's. This isn't right. I think it should snap my head back and not stay in between gears for so long and then slide into 2nd gear. I have my new 1994 PCM installed and no help with the shift. I think it's the EPC. Any ideas? I have a little over 1,000 miles on the rebuilt tranny now.

On top of the transmission look for the big white plug. Take it off, clean the contacts, and then plug it back in. I had to do this the other day after adjusting my MLPS, and the car wouldn't shift.

Winterhawk, what was the final 'resolution' to your shifting problem with the Certified Rebuilt ATX? I purchased a Certified Rebuilt ATX for my '93 SHO in the Spring of 2019 and I am having the same problem. My previous ATX rebuild by 'Doug' in Atlanta in 2002 performed great until I blew the front trans seal during a rather aggressive driving session at a road course event in south Louisiana. I purchased the transmission rebuild through SHO Source and Mike did not mention that I could have a similar 1-2 shift problem. In 2018, I modified my SHO for autocross and was doing well until this sluggish shift problem with the certified rebuild. I am definitely look for solution, as the shifting delay is increasing my run times, as compared to sessions in 2018.

I haven't shifted like the description above, but my 1-2 shifts are still firm 15K later. Are you running a shift kit or chip, or was it a stock rebuild.

Yes, I realize I am digging though dusty trails of Forum posts, but I have only recently joined the forum. In years past, I have had little need for the Forum, as my SHO was essentially hibernating in the garage ( driven 1,000 - 1500 miles / yr. for local errands, since 2005) . Now that I am retired, I decided to re-purpose the car for autocross, with mostly suspension upgrades, and tires. OK, so now things are breaking or failing at an alarming rate. Nothing was a major cost until the transmission rebuild. Purchased the rebuild through SHO Source (Certified Transmissions in Omaha), with the same outcome as mentioned by Winterhawk. My previous rebuild (2002) by Doug Lewis, near Atlanta, worked just fine. At this point, I need to locate a rebuild shop which has a bit more knowledge (and integrity) for working on the SHO transmission.
