Clutch time...
I pulled the trans off the 90 titanium to find a rather interesting sight underneath. It seems as though the car is still on the original 9.25" clutch and PP. Doesnt make sense to me at all. The transmission was replaced (only the transmission, not the clutch) about 5k miles ago and shortly thereafter the clutch failed. Thats when I picked it up, so I dont have a history, all I know is the clutch disk is definitly toast. I can move it around inside the PP with one finger. It doesnt make sense that the stocker clutch would ever last this long. I recall my uncle mentioning that his failed @ 9K, and I have heard of others failing around that mileage. Im almost sure the car has 143K and not 43K. Typical wear for that mileage, and I have found alot of replacement parts all over the car, things that dont need replacing at 43k. Very Puzzling. Also, how can I identify what year the replacement trans was made in? The date code reads OK24.

flywheel question

The clutch replacement I will be using is a low mileage used unit. Flywheel looks good, but should I still get it resurfaced while I have it out? What can I do to clean up the PP?

also, I thought the clutch failure was causing the shifting problems into 2nd, 4th, and reverse - (like bad tob or pp) but even with the trans out and disconnected it hangs up with the shift shaft completly in. I had to pry it out with a crowbar thats how stuck it was. Once its out, the rest of the positions are fine. When the trans was still in the car, the trans would get hang up once in 2nd, 4th, or reverse. Very hard to get out of the gear once I had it it. 1st, 3rd, and 5th all operated fine and smooth. My other spare trans does not get hung up at all and I can pull it out with my hand - so there is definitly a problem. Any thoughts on what this could be? I guess I may have to use the spare MTX :madflame: .

You're going with the 9.25" clutch again? If not, you need a new/used flywheel that accepts the 9.75" kit. There are 9.25" kits out there, but many recommend the 9.75". SPEC cluthes also have the 9.25" kit for cheap...stage 5 in the 9.25" is cheaper than the stage 1 in 9.75", IIRC.

No, the new clutch is an OEM 9.75" kit with flywheel. Im just thinking it may be a good idea to have the flywheel resurfaced while I have it upart.

It's not a bad idea to get the flywheel resurfaced.

Also, was there a quill sleeve on the TOB shaft? If it's just bare aluminum then it may be the original stuff, but if there's a quill sleeve it's definitely been replaced at some time. Be sure to put a decent revB TOB in there as well if you don't want to have to do this again any time soon (with a quill sleeve).

There is no quill sleeve on the trans. My theory is that the replacement trans was a low mileage unit (perhaps as low as 5K miles) and they also installed the low mileage 9.25" clutch that was with it, not knowing it was defective and would burn up in a few thousand miles. Its not listed on the reciept, but that seems like the only likey possibility.

Hey, consider yourself lucky! that clutch means your tranny has lots of life in it! I just found out today that someone JB-welded my tranny to make it stop leaking. And they put so many things back together wrong when the old owner had the half-shafts replaced. I got screwed because I didn't properly inspect the car, all I saw was the one and only car that I would take before any other. Now look where I am. :madflame:

I replaced my clutch at 169k. It was the original, although it was a 9.75", w/ no quill sleeve.

If you know how to drive a clutch, and are nice to it, you can make it last a surprisingly long time. Although I AM surprised that this "little" clutch lasted this long! I'll bet the motor was never abused, either... :thumb:

Definitely get the flywheel resurface while you're in there.

when i had my trans out for clutch replacement, i also found what looked to be JB Weld. in actuality (as i later learned), when casting the case, cracks may develop and normal operating procedure is to use a thin coat of JB Weld type substance to seal the crack.

Are you sure? My dad's been working on SHO's since 1990 and he says that that is not true. He's worked on literally thousands of different SHO's and none of them have had any JB-weld like substance anywhere.

Yes, get the flywheel resurfaced. You'll wish you did later.

Yes it's easily worth the $30 bucks. When we replaced my clutch today, we looked at the Fidanza and it had hot marks all over it because the shop never resurfaced the flywheel. That's why my clutch was slipping sometimes. Here's the kicker, the clutch only had 7k on it when I pulled it out! :madflame:

Don't forget to replace that rear main seal while you are at it. It's looking pretty nasty.

I agree, with the flywheel out it's a good idea to replace the rear main and probably also the rear main carrier gaskets.

Im still confused about the trans. May be a low mileage unit, but it seems to hang up with the shift shaft all the way in. (2nd, 4th, and reverse were hanging up when in car) Any ideas?
