$1200 for speedo???!!!

My speedometer wasn't working so I took it into the ford dealership to see what they could find. 4 hours later he calls me up and says the head is fine. but that's all he knows. He would have to get into the tranny to see if it's a broken cable, sensor, or something else. I asked him price he said best case I'm looking at $300.00. worst case $1200.00. FOR A SPEEDOMETER!!!

I live in Bluffton IN. I don't have the tools to do it myself. and I'm pretty much flat broke on top of that. Any ideas on whether or not the ford estimates are accurate? or maybe where I could get it done for cheaper when I do get the money?

I`d believe it,Ford has some outrageous prices on parts you wouldn`t expect to be expensive.Luckily,Tauri are a dime a dozen in the junkyards.You`ll be able to get a used one cheap.

I have the entire instrument cluster for a Gen II. Would you be interested? $600. HA. Make me an offer, it is in excellent condition.

To check the cable is a 5 minute experience. Nothing difficult about that.

The sensor that he is probably referring to is the VSS and controls the idle while at speed along with the cruise control.

I am betting that one of your speedo cables is broken. Just yank it out of the drive gear on the trans and twist it around. Does your Speedo move? If not, investigate further. There is an upper and a lower cable. Usually the lower one goes.

BTW, if your speedo is indeed bad, just get a used one from someone around here. They can always be had for less than $100 used.

sry.. I didn't mean to say the actual cluster was gonna be 1200. Something in the transmission may be broke, and if so, THAT would cost 1200. The head is fine, meaning the cluster is fine. I think it's just the lower cable. I'll try to change that and see what happens.
