A tranny failure is easily fixed at at least half the price. I don't think getting AX4N parts will ever be a problem or getting people to rebuild them either. Rebuilding a SHO V8 will be very costly and difficult to say the least.

Steve you may be right, but there is a lot of the CLA that you dont know about, there is alot about the manufactures process that you dont know about, even the real place that they were made for that fact. Its a numbers game, I can assure that there is atleast 1 car that wont fail that has not had them welded. The odds will show that, but who wants to take that chance? Not Me..
And I can document now 132 other cars that wont fail in the future as well. Do you smoke?

And you are certainly right about the 'CLA', since I do not remember what the initials even stand for.
I think we are on the same page on this. It is, to my mind, foolish not to get the cams welded or pinned at some point. The numbers game, again to my mind, is how long can be safely waited before doing so, considering the odds. Looking at the milages from the data you made available on V8.SHO.com (I think it was you), I would suggest not waiting much longer than 50,000 miles. But sooner is certainly safer.
And you should stop smoking. wink

Data that I have been able to review from "official"sources would support that there is no pat answer to mileage. lo milers have toasted cams, cars less than 30 days old have toasted cams, and a few go 100K+ with no incident. Unless your just feelin lucky, weld em, pin em or most likely lose em.

The cams do not fry themselves after a certain number of miles. There is no correlation there. Mine went 40K with no problem, but some have failed much earlier than that. Yes this engine is capable of 100K+ before any major work should have to be done, but that is bs . I think anybody who goes 100K+ without welds has a guardian angel. As for the transmission...thats another story, another debate, which I am sure will be coming in the not-too-far future. My tranny is being rebuilt as we speak. headbang

hello, folks. something else to consider, i'm surrounded in my professional life with with statistics (and those that apply them, not me) that far exceed any attempt in this forum that tries to predict the failure rate of a v8 cam. the only hypothesis that I believe is that statistics can be used to prove or disprove any argument, and that the only statistic that is important to me is that which affects my universe. in my universe (n=2, a '96 and a '97)), i've welded 8 cam sprockets that all but 2 showed some degree of displacement. in my eyes, thats a potential failure rate of 6 out of 8, or 100% of my engines were approaching failure.
my point: the individual cam failure (or potential failure) rate is most likely higher if you consider the number of cam sprockets that have walked in each engine. how this affects failure rate predictions for the 20k genIII population is beyond my expertise (and interest). I have 4 chances per engine for catastrophic failure, in both cases the null hypothesis was disproven, there is a significant increase in the potential failure rate of a v8 cam. ...and catastrophic = more than I'm willing to pay.
...and i'm tired of subsidizing the healthcare costs for the 60k, or so, annual smoking related deaths.
