I have a 1992 SHO and I think it might be the fuel pump. When I start the car it will start but will die when give it gas. I was hoping it might be the fuel filter! Because the car did sit for a long time before I got the car! Anyone please respond if you had this problem or think you might know what it could be! It could be the fuel pump! Also anyone know where I can get a new one or order a fuel pump! If we decide that is what needs to be replaced!:thankyou:

You might get a better response by posting this in the correct forum. Here Does your fuel pump angage? You should hear it engage when you turn the key.

If you do a little searching you might find your answer.

Here's a thought: Change your fuel filter. Does it still die when you give it gas? Then yes, it's probably your fuel pump.

If it's sat for a year the fuel filter needs changing in any case.

I would definately try new gas. Gas can go bad in a few months without adding gas stabilizer to it and definately replace that filter or you will be replacing the fuel pump too if it's not already bad.

If the car starts up, it's not bad gas. A car will run on bad gas, although, it will run like crap, but it will run. Your filter is probably partially plugged. When it sits for a bit enough gas will seap thru to start it, but when you hit the gas it dies..... I would change the fuel filter first thing, and go from there. Report back after changing the filter.

I agree, it's not "bad gas".

First, change the fuel filter as suggested. More fuel pumps are ruined by people not changing the fuel filter, than by running the tank low and overheating it, as some often suggest. While it's not likely the cause, it is relatively inexpensive (versus the fuel pump) and may allow the pump to make it another few days while you're awaiting the fuel pump. But in all likelihood not.

It's more likely the fuel pump. A clogged filter will inhibit fuel flow at all rpms, including idle. But a "weak" fuel pump can sufficiently pump enough to provide the fuel required by the ECM at idle, whereas when it senses throttle movement through the TPS sensor it cannot keep-up with the supply commanded by the ECM. This results in the pressure dropping below a minimum psi that results in the engine shutting down.

The last two examples of these exact same symptoms I have seen, have both been the fuel pump. One a 97 Gen III Taurus, the other a 96 Continental.
