Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 is a stud-beast. I have a friend who has driven his into the dirt (literally, and hit poles) the last 4 years and it still will not die. We changed the oil and serpentine belt last fall and I thought it was on it's last legs then.

Yea.. im not saying they are good motors. .They are tractor motors!! the 4.0 in a ZJ tho is So under powered to. like the 4.0 OHV is a DOG in the explorer... Yea. i beat the crap out of my first explorer. It liked redline... Was still in solid shape when i sold it at 150k.. Altho the timing tensioner was loose it still ran like a pig!!

they can take a lot. unfortunately lifing it over 4.5 inches costs a small fortune. The axles suck for anything over a 33 inch tire and the trans is also a weak point.

Cherokee... i dont like them... sorry.. Ive owned 4 explorers and they are way better cars imho. And i know tim's gonna chime in his .02 so im ready for it.. but yea... to each is his own

true, they aren't as much fun as a car, but it's pretty fun to drive on/over curbs, and look down on people when you pass them while it's snowing. It's also nice to be up high because when you make some turns at night when people look at you all they see are headlights coming right for them.

the standard 3.55 gears don't help much but they are definietly slow. I'm not a fan of dumping all sorts of fuel into the combustion chambers to get up to speed so I usually stick to the right lane until I get up to cruising speed and pass people. You can't look down on 19.5 miles per gallon combined on a 4x4...

Yea!! My first explorer was the 4.0 SHOC v6 with 3.55 gears and that thing MOVED... Not super torqey but once it got to 3k and above it was sweet.. The explorers arent cheap to lift either... But you can do a torsion twist and some shackles and get 2-3 inches of list and easily run 33's

it's possible to do a 2-3 inch budget boost on a grand. V8 front springs go to the rear and a set of aftermarket springs go to the front. upgrade the shocks to a longer length and call it a day. then you hope to **** you don't get death wobble.

It's always possible to do something cheap, but I'd rather do it right.

I was looking at a 5.0 explorer LTD for about 10 minutes before not getting any help at all from the dealership and deciding that AWD and a V8 wouldn't bode well for fuel economy. It was definitely a nice looking truck though.

yea, my black one was the 5.0 AWD. it got about 2 to 3 miles per gallon less than my friends cherokee with the 4.0 **. but when it had the vacuum leak... it was bad. You can do a transfer case swap from an f150 that gives you a manual t-case with 2wd and low ranges like an f150. Its a direct bolt in, but of course you need to get a few things to make it work correctly in the computers eyes, and of course a good old hammer to make it fit!! :)

That'd make two Husker Red/Black Gen 2's in the NebSHO club!

sounds good, it's nice that there is some maintenance that has been done.

You know where to go to have the parts painted!:thumb:

I'm not a very big fan of the 99+ Grands either. I was parked next to one and mine is a lot taller all the way around.

If I woulda known about the t-case swap I probably would have gotten a similar reaction to when we were offered a fox body mustang. the stang is obviously RWD and a RWD doesn't fare very well in getting up hills during the winter, especially in my neighborhood. My dad looked at me like I was stupid when I said that all I needed would be a T case, Dana front axle, and some other odds and ends.

iv got a 97 explorer 4.0 v6 ohv awd, but its not full time its like when the rear tires slip the front ones slam into gear and your movin. its really weird when in the mud or in snow/ice. i find it better just to flip the switch on the dash into 4X4 high. its a under powered turd but its nice and a great change from the sho with no door handles and super stiff suspension. its the best daily driver i have ever had. for a daily driver i will take an explorer over any other car/truck iv owned. when i get rid of my 97 il for sure be gettin another explorer prolly a sport trac. they look cool.

on another note sorry to hear about your ex gettin totaled.

Just wondering clay...how much did you pay for you Explorer(s).

Cuz I payed 3K even for my Cherokee...:thankyou: And it's still moving right along every day...through rain, snow, heat...damn near anything...And that's 2 cars you've gone through since I've had mine...

Call it whatever you want, but don't EVER say Ex's are better cars...:thumb:
