camera mount?

do you want an adhesive solution or one you screw in? The latter would be more stable, but more permanent... http://www.ram-mount.com is a good place to start.

I think for an autocross it would be okay, but you might check with your tech inspector first. I'd guess something like this or a suction-cup mount be okay, but first find out what will pass tech.

I've seen a few different versions of this sort of mount, so I'm guessing they're not too hard to find. Personally, that pic scares me for track use, but for an autox it's probably fine as long as it'll get through tech.

I don't know about the gen 1s but here is the the way I rigged up mine in my gen2, I removed my factory sub awhile ago. This leaves a section of holes in the back carpet that are not quite though. I just opened up one of these holes, you can harly see it. And all I needed to do was use a peice of 1/8 plate under there 4x4 or so. Don't seem to think it needs to be metal and it could be thicker. Any way just drill a 1/4 hole in the center of that. Then screw a 1/4" bolt of the approate length into the bottom of your camera and it will hold it there very well. For an example look in the road course section I posted a few vids there.

That CruisCam should pass tech with no problems. I have that exact mount and I've run a couple autocrosses and 4 track days with it.

just checked with our tech peoples, and that cruise cam mount seems to meet all the rules and requirements so long as i use the strap as well. its now on order.

Just that it's a lot of mass hanging on the end of a cantilevered beam, which is the structural design least likely to survive an impact without failing. (Especially since it's not exactly anchored to the strongest thing in the car.) I wouldn't want a loose camera bashing around near my head in accident. The strap will help that if it's secured so that the camera can't get to you, and I'm glad to hear they require the strap.

Also, in a severe rollover or t-bone I wouldn't be too excited about what is essentially a spear with a camera on it right near my neck.

But autox is pretty tame stuff as far as accident likelihood is concerned, so I wouldn't be nearly as worried in autox. FWIW, I got that pic from someone in our local NASA region asking if it was okay for DE, and the answer he got was that it was okay. I've since learned that it's fairly common for people to use these in DE events. Physics is often underappreciated by the non-scientific.

interesting. yah, i figured there might be some safety concerns with regards to it. I googled "how to make a camera mount", and came up with some pages where they use an aluminum squared tube with holes cut out for the headrest posts, and its mounted in the center that way. also saw one on the suby forums for one that mounts under the passenger headrest only, mounted to a plate between the headrest posts.

If i ever make my way to an open road course with higher speeds and more "danger", I'll probably look into another kind of mount.

That's what I have as well. Those dudes are solid enough that they're not going anywhere, and pretty popular as a result. Comes with a strap, too, which makes them race-legal with a lot of groups.

But ya do need a harness bar on which to mount it.

Hey Jim, when you ordered your mount, did you get any confirmation/order number from them, or anything acknoledging the purchase? Its been nearly 2 weeks since i ordered mine with nothing in the way of a "thank you for your purchase" or order number, or even replies to my emails.... getting prepared to cancel my paypal payment.

you feel horrible? for recomending them? you weren't to know. their website is still up and accepting money, so there is no reason to know unless you've tried calling them like i did. I'll just have to find another site to buy from.
