A couple of days ago I replaced the rod bearings. I made sure to torque them to the proper spec.... I used around 35 ft-lbs (first at 25, then at 35). When I started the car I hear a whirling noise coming from the engine. I am very certain it is the rod bearings making noise! I currently have 5W-30 High Mileage in the engine now. Do you think I should switch to a thicker oil? What could this problem be?

Yes, you can use engine oil, I've done that in about 5 SHO's and not a problem. :thumb:

I used a thin film of syn. grease to **** the bearings. i also primed the bearings by a cranking the engine over few times. The noise almost sounds like high pitch bearing rubbing noise.

Have you used a stethascope (sp?) to try and find exactly where the noise is coming from? You may be able to eleminate bearing problems if the sound is coming from elsewhere.

Unless you can find a simple problem, you need to pull the oil pan back off and see what has happened.

ok I figured out the problem... i guess my music is always turned up and I didnt notice before that one of my tensioner bearings was going out. When I looked under the car today I used a screw driver to probe parts of the car and found that one of my tensioner pulleys is giving out. This sucks because those bearings are very expensive (well for bearings). I dont think my oil pan was making noise.

You can also try to save the bearing...take it apart(you are talking of replacing it anyway) and clean it.

Pack some new grease in there and replace the seal.

It's worked for me (while waiting for the new bearing to arrive).

I'm just doing my bearings to, it was told just to coat them in oil before sticking them on, engine ****?

thats not a problem, just make sure you crank the engine for a good 30seconds before you let it start. this will let it build oil pressure up.
