Just took delivery of a 2018 SHO yesterday, and one thing that drove me nuts was the soot and junk on the exhaust tips.
Cleaned them up, and after a little 'spirited' driving this afternoon, I had some more of this **** on the tips.

Is this normal? Is there any way to clean the exhaust system a bit?
I get it, exhaust is dirty. But, I also have a 2014 Taurus SEL, almost 179,000 miles, 3.5L non ecoboost, and they don't look anything like this.

It’s the nature of the beast. Not much to do except keep cleaning them. Yeah you won’t get that with the naturally aspirated SEL.

Gotcha.
Small price to pay I guess, but wanted to ask to make sure it wasn't something else maybe going wrong.

My second SHO, first one was a 95, so no turbos on that either.

Yeah I don’t like it either. I ended up getting my exhaust tips powder coated black, now I don’t even notice ….but when I wash the inside….it’s gross.

They are all correct. SHO exhaust is a true exit design in which soot will make it onto the tips, some newer cars, even my truck have a hole just before the tip, allowing soot to stay under and flow out before tip, keeping tip looking new. All an illusion by manufacturers to keep there exhaust looking new and clean.

People pay extra for black tips on the custom exhausts!

Unfortunately that's the operation of the direct injected engine. No cleaning of the valves takes place during combustion so you end up getting a lot of trash and blowby through the system.

Ethanol blended fuels help a little bit, but even still I just get into the habit of keeps a Mother's detail ball and some stainless clean cleaner on hand to give it a hit once a week.

If you fancy drive through car washes, spray some of this on your wheels, brake calipers and exhaust tips a few minutes before going through and it'll clean it up as well.
