The rear decklid speaker or “sub” if you want to call it sounded a bit off when I turn up the volume on some songs. I looked more into it and it seems to be working fine with no cracks but the rear deck lid is incredibly susceptible to rattle especially with the sunshade, and that’s what I was hearing. I had 2 12” alpine subwoofers in my last taurus that are currently sitting in my room and I’m contemplating on putting one of them in the SHO. I need to get rid of the rattle before upgrading any speakers or adding subwoofers. Anyone have any tips? The deck lid almost needs some sort of reinforcement to keep it steady.

I've never had that issue but you could probably put Dynomat or Roadkill on the backside of the plastic to dampen it. I suggest using the same on the inside of the trunk for your sub(s) as well.

There was a TSB on the 2010's about this. They actually put little pieces of foam on the sunshade to stop it from rattling. The next fix was actually software to get rid of some base. So stupid!
That sunshade is useless. My 15 does the same thing now. I suggest removing it completely. Then install your woofers.

On my 2016 SHO with the sony stereo it came with 2 6x9's and a single smaller maybe 5x7 speaker in the center of the rear deck. I have replaced the 6x9s in the rear deck and unplugged the 5x7. I also replaced all 4 door speakers as well and put a sub in the trunk.
I removed all the carpeting from the trunk and put a sound dampening material from knukonceptz everywhere in the trunk. I covered the bottom of the rear deck in sound dampener as well and have not had any rattling. The only rattling I had to fix was oddly enough the front dome lights, I played around with some paper shims in there until the rattle stopped.
The problem I have with the sound dampening on the underside of the rear deck is that it keeps falling and sagging the carpet down. I cleaned the metal with rubbing alcohol, warmed the adhesive with a heat gun, and it still wont stay stuck. I plan on putting that sound dampening material on the top side of the rear deck instead now.
On the plus side the electrical system on the taurus is quite strong. I've installed "the big 3" and an odyssey extreme battery and 0 guage wiring to the trunk and never experience any light dimming with the 1200 watt rms sub amp and the speaker amp.
While messing with the carpeting on top of the rear deck and installing the new speakers I messed up the alignment for the opening of the rear sunshade and it doesn't like to go up on its own reliably now.

I must've missed that post, I wasn't trying to make repeat threads. The foam between the sunshade sounds like a viable solution, as I'm going to be tinting the back windshield anyways and won't be using it. Although knowing some of my friends one of them will probably press the button for it lol. I can't imagine doing a software fix to remove bass! Obviously that defeats the purpose of having a better sound system in the first place, plus it's a hardware issue anyways. Thanks for the help

I stand corrected, my 2016 also has the 2 6x9's in the rear and one in the center. Yeah the carpeting isn't all that sturdy and doesn't seem to be attached anywhere too well. Funny enough I had the same issue on my '14 SEL with the dome lights and I used nerf darts cut in half, did the job pretty well. I'll come back to this thread and update it if I figure out a solution.

My sunshade wasn't parking corectlty causing a rattle as you describe. Specifically the drivers side. There is a little divot that the top of the shade fits into when the shade is closed to prevent rattles, you may want to look there.

I was going to start a new thread and I'm glad I came across this one.
I have the same issue, I already took the sunshade off, placed foam underneath and tightened it back using thread locker. The rattle got much much better but it is still there with heavy bass music.
Was planning to add a self-powered sub so I could take the bass way down on the factory system and leave it all to the sub but after reading this, I'll go check if I can identify that divot...
