So I'm about to change trans fluid...

...and looking for any pointers before I get started. I'm changing all my fluids today actually and switching to Amsoil SS ATF.

Anyway, service manual calls for 11 qts---check

However, it also says, "If the transmission was removed and disassembled, fill the transmission with 6.2L (6.5 qt) of clean transmission fluid. If the main control cover was removed, fill the transmission with
4.3L (4.5 qt) of clean transmission fluid."

When I drain the fluid, will I get all 11qts out? Will this thing actually require a full-on fluid exchange, means I'll have to take it somewhere?

Torque converter holds a lot. Which most aren't drainable.

You could do that. It would probably get you at almost 100% new fluid.
Some people change it so often it gets almost fully switched in no time. Lol

I've never been big on different fluids for automatics. It made a bigger difference on manuals I felt.

Get like 6 quarts of some cheapo ATF. Run the car, drain it, fill it with the cheapo, drive it easy around the block, drain and fill with mercon lv or amsoil atf

....idk about this...seems like you would have a bunch of el cheapo in there using this method.....is there a benefit?

Kinda my thoughts, though I do appreciate all the suggestions. It's not really a big deal for me to go to the dealership and have them flush it with el cheapo, then do the fluid exchange with my Amsoil. I was hoping to just do it at home simply for sake of ease. I've spent money on her on other things, I don't mind paying a bit extra to have it exchanged the right way.

Yeah I wouldn't recommend this either. In a perfect world you'd want to drain all of the fluid and put in new.

6 quarts of dirty fluid plus 6 quarts of new fluid equals 12 quarts of dirty fluid. I think the 5 out/5 in method is a good compromise if the fluid isn't bad already.

I have seen a post where someone disconnected their trans cooler lines and used the pump (with the engine running) to push the old fluid out in to a bucket, and pull in the new fluid from a different bucket.

I've been wondering if we might be able to fashion up some extra line to make access easier, with some quick connects to facilitate. I'm just not I'm that creative.

May I ask how much this usually costs?

If you lift the rear of the car and let it drain for 30 minutes youll drain the TC too

Can you link a reference?
Well for one thing I'm not sure why you guys think the TC stays full... thats not possible, at rest it drains down into the tranny and theres only really like a quart or less of it in there.
But when I did this I was able to drain out almost 11 quarts so yeah theres probably a bit of the mercon V in there, but less than a quart in nearly 11 quarts of mercon lv im not too concerned. The real thing is how long you wanna wait if you leave it up there itll keep draining out just very slowly

@Ecoboost_xsport I STONGLY RECOMMEND NOBODY EVER DOES TRANSMISSION FLUSHES AT FORD DEALERSHIPS!!!! I've literally seen 6 transmissions go to ford for a flush perfectly fine and come back ****** up. They hook some pressure system into it that forces the fluid through the tranny without it spinning at all and it ***** up sensors and shit

I guess at some point I owned a vehicle with a torque converter drain plug and about 6 quarts drained out and flooded the drain pan i was attempting to use.

So trucks are obviously much larger and hold more. But only the bottom half at most is still holding fluid, so you do have a good point, i just dont think its nearly as big a deal as you think, maybe just use mercon V if your doing it my way so atleast your not mixing manufacturers

Hmmm, interesting. Service manual literally says hook that machine up to do a fluid exchange. I've got no knowledge if anybody's has failed or not using that technique but I guess it's possible.

Well you might research it, like i said, ive seen it happen 6 times. I had a 2010 connect that I had them do a flush on and it always shifted hard into 3rd after that
