Rear Differential Fluid (AWD) vs. PTU Fluid (AWD)

Say Aloha to Tulsi for me if you run into her. Yes 18oz capacity in the PTU and I think someone posted a DIY drainplug somewhere.

I would replace the PTU fluid with Redline Lightweight Shockproof Fluid honestly.

So I had my mechanic syphon out the 75w-140 from the back RDU and replaced it with Royal Purple 75w-90 (close enough to 80w-90, and the best quality I could find here on Oahu) We replaced the front PTU with a quart of Royal Purple 75w-140 so I think we should be okay.

However, there was an awful smell afterwards! Like a burning metal smell. I thought I was on fire somewhere at first. But no visible leaks, just some oil residue where the work was done. Is this the gear oil burning up on the heated parts? Man it stinks...

We just completed the oil exchange so I hope it's not leaking? (jury's still out on that though, I am monitoring) However, there is a lot of gear oil residue on the surrounding areas of the PTU. I wonder if degreasing that off would help?

Spray if off with brake fluid. If you still smell it then you probably have a leak. Most likely it's just burning off the residue. Also check wherever you're parking to see if there are any stains from a potential leak.

I can imagine how bad it smells burnt. That stuff gets stuck in your nostrils.

I've got fresh pieces of cardboard under the car to monitor for dripping. Brake fluid spray? I'll have to get creative with the application.

I was going to use Simple Green and a TON of disposable cloth, but I'll give it a try.

I guess that would work. If you have it, I'd say use that rather than buying something else.

I use the spray cans of brake cleaner because it's cheap and works pretty well.
