hey guys, I have a noise I’m trying to diagnose and am stumped. In the last couple days I’ve noticed a weird rattling noise coming from the engine, but only from about 15mph to 20mph and it stops as soon as I let off the gas or exceed 20mph. I wondered about it being the timing chain, but I’ve never had any noise at all on start up and I’ve never heard of it manifesting like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Year and mileage would be helpful. It's specific to road speed, and not RPM?

2012, ~63,500 miles. And it does seem to be road speed not rpm as it doesn’t do it at higher speeds with similar rpm. I posted some videos where you can hear the noise.

I'll let others weigh in on this, but to me, it almost sounds like a CV joint. Do you hear any noises when the steering wheel is turned all the way one way and you take off from a dead stop?

I just went out and tried a couple full lock turns from a stop and didn’t hear any noises. I’m going to be getting under it and doing a trans drain and fill this weekend so I’ll look at the CVs, but I feel (and dread) it’s a problem with the engine.

Could be the PTU... sounds like a loose bearing or something.

I had the PTU fluid changed a few months and ~4K miles ago and it was still liquid rather than sludge so I hope that’s not it. About a few weeks ago I had an injector get stuck open. I turned it off immediately and had it towed and fixed, oil changed etc, but that’s why I’m worried there’s something major going on with the engine. Worried an engine bearing was washed out or something. Thank you for weighing in.

Take the appearance cover off and inspect everything to make sure nothing is loosely clamped or out of place. Different load/road conditions will create different orders of NVH, might just be that.

It could be related to wastegate or blowoff valve.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll give that a shot.
