Hey guys, new to this style of car. Trying to read up as much as I can. I just got a 2015 with 60k in Kansas City MO and want to first do some good upgrades to make the motor and drivetrain last a long time and get better quality parts then start working on tunes and other bigger mods. Some common ones I’ve heard will be spark plugs and a catch can and I’ve heard mixed stuff on a new thermostat. Any recommendations on particular parts or stuff I might need to do soon with the miles and year I’m at?

THANKS

Personally, change all the fluids. Oil, Engine Coolant, PTU (Power Transfer Unit), Trans Fluid, and RDU fluid (Rear Differential Unit). That will give you peace of mind.

Oil: I run Mobil 1 with a Mobil 1 oil filter or K&N filter. I use Mobil 1 because Walmart sells it dirty cheap, and I change my oil every 2500 to 3000 miles. Cheap insurance.
Engine Coolant: Factory Ford Coolant
Trans Fluid: Factory Ford Trans Fluid
PTU: Redline LW Shock Proof is the go to for most here (I used Mobil One Gear Oil)
RDU: Factory Ford RDU Fluid

I believe a catch can is a must on any boost application, but that opinion varies here.

Put a K&N drop in airfilter in the stock air box. CAI are a waste of money on these cars personally.

A tune from a reputable company is the best bang for your money. AJPTurbo, Livernois, Unleashed, Ortiz, ect... They will advise you on what tuner, what T-Stat, plugs, ect would be best for their tune.

Good luck and enjoy your ride.

Welcome and congrats! First recommendation is do ALL fluids, get a clean start as it were. All Motorcraft is fine as long as you do REGULAR fluid changes. You can step up to better fluids/filters for the PTU/RDU, engine oil, trans fluid, etc if you want. Especially if you love the wawa pedal or hit the strip often :D

Motorcraft plugs do fine on stock tune SP534. Otherwise if running a "hot tune", might want to switch to 542's.

The catch can is only useful if you have a lot of blow by. If your engine is working normally, this should not be an issue. If you tune it, then a catch can is a good idea because the added boost may well result in too much blow by. Ford tested these cars in stock configuration so when you add 100HP and 100TQ you are testing something that Ford has never tried. Also, be aware that some Catch Cans change internal engine pressures which can lead to other issues.

I dont agree. I believe any boosted motor should have one. Put a UPR CC on your car and check it after 5k miles, you tell me if you want that crap recycling through your motor.

A CC is NOT necessary.

Jeff's correct that employing one, does uncover and/or contribute to issues longer term.

Essentially, pulling oil AWAY from vital components, which a CC does, leads to premature failure of various components. An arguement can be made of course that not using one can lead to issues as well I suppose.

However the other issue is (and is particular to the EB platform specifically) is that there is so much inconsistency in the operation and/or observed end result of a CC being used.

Some of this has to do with installation error, some of it has to do with mere design flaws, but either way, to say one "needs" (to install a CC) is of one's opinion. Nothing more, nothing less.

An individual choice ultimately.

Though i run a catch can I agree with bpd. There’s not enough evidence to suggest it’s necessary. Just a choice or personal preference

Like I said, the crap that comes out of my CC gives me all the ammo I need to justify one.

Just a follow up for the non CC crowd......

Here is 3000 miles of mixed non daily driving in my SHO. Mobil 1 5W-30. This was two 700 mile round trip adventures, 15 ish track passes, 5 dyno pulls, on various "hottness" AJPTurbo E30 tunes.

Like I said, the GDI motors (esp the force induction ones) have this problem. There is a reason they are putting secondary injectors before the intake valves again.

I don't want that crap in the bottle recycling/recirculating into my motor at anytime. A $400 UPR CC is worth the piece of mind and changing my oil every 3k is no sweat.
