On my 89 SHO the cruise worked pretty consistently up to a few mths ago.

Cant think why but I did change the servo .... put a different wheel on it etc

It still works but intermittenly. Sometimes yes sometimes no

Thought it might be the clock spring but that would have affected more controls.

When it does engage .... to disengage I have to hit the break .... the off button wont work

I'd try the throttle position sensor. Grab you a multimeter and test between two of the pins (I forget which two-probe around) until you get a resistance that changes when you twist the sensor.

when you find the set, clip the leads on if you can and slowly twist the sensor input and watch the ohms on the meter. If it jumps instead of climbing and falling smoothly, your switch is bunk.

well the tps has nothing to do with cruise activation or deactivation, so I don't see the point of that exercise.

it sounds like your steering whee controls are not working right - dirty contacts on the switch, connector, or clockspring are the most likely candidates.
