Ticking under moderate load

Now that the weather has warmed up enough to drive with the windows down, I've noticed a ticking noise coming from the passenger side under moderate load- I'm pretty sure it sounds like a boost controller (roughly 15-20 ticks per second) I just never remember hearing this noise last summer. Any thoughts, is this normal.

(I can really only hear when I can bounce the noise off a guardrail or shrubs)

Most often the ticking sounds, especially when regular/rhythmic, will come from the fuel injectors. There's always the possibility something is caught in the works, of course.

Have you tried listening for this sound when revving the engine in Neutral? Would be much easier to isolate that way. Removing the engine cover to check for origin will help also, along with a mechanic's stethoscope.

Yes, I have listened to it in the driveway idle and reving the noise is not there. Only when you get into a loaded boost acceleration you can hear the turbo's spool slightly followed by clicking like a boost controller limiting boost. Thing is I just haven't heard that clicking before not on this car anyway. Stock btw

Could be a controller, haven't heard it mentioned elsewhere though. Maybe others are used to it, or are less sensitive to it?

Does it change in loudness if you turn the wheel one way or the other when the ticking sound happens? Wondering if it is a bearing/hub issue. You have a '13 right? Although this should be able to be created at low speed also.

'14 . It does not so much change in loudness, but possibly frequency slower at lower boost to slightly faster at higher boost. The noise is fully controllable by throttle input. Yes it noticeable at any speed but more so at slow speeds where wind noise isn't prominent.

Here is a representation of it lol ( turbo starts to spool, click click 15-20 per second, engine note takes over and can no longer hear anything but engine induction) It's best heard around 30% or so throttle with a guard rail on the passenger side both front windows all the way down.

It may be coming from both sides but there's usually nothing for the sound to bounce off from on the drivers side.

Has anyone tried to reproduce this noise? Any idea what could be making this sound?

My ticking sound was because of a bad half shaft on the drivers side. Check that too.

Update. I took the car into ford. The technician had me drive the car while he listened for it, i was able to reproduce the clicking and he said he couldnt hear it.

So we swapped seats. He drove and break boosted it next to a building. He asked if I hear the clicking, I said yes he said he still cant hear it.

He took it into the garage while to techs. Listened to it and wound up finally hearing it. They said the noise is normal and is the characteristic of engine... some help. Lol

just means they don't have an answer. lincoln dealership a possibility? use chassis ears maybe?

A nail or screw in a tire can make a ticking noise, though the faster you drive the faster the ticking......

I changed my plugs this weekend and forgot to put the rubber insulation back on the regulator (I don't know exactly what it is, might be part of pcv system) that's under the plastic on top of the motor. It ticked very rapidly and sounded awful. This may be what they thought the noise was coming from as that is a characteristic of the motor thus why ford installed the rubber insulation.

Not saying you don't have a problem but i am saying that they may of thought this was the ticking. Ide recommend removing the insulation while the motor idles and see if that's what your hearing.

My ticking is still there hasnt gotten any worse or better, but mine only starts to tick when I hear the turbos begin to spool and they are quite faint sounding along with the ticking. Again I can't hear anything unless im accelerating along side a guard rail and going 20-30 mph or so- need something to bounce the noise off from.

I could hear it at idle with insulation off.

Just took the car for a spin with the cover and fuel regulator insulator off- the car us definitely noisier and I can hear a different style of ticking at idle. The ticking under load noise is still there and is maybe just a very very minor bit louder.

Did you put up a video or audio file with the ticking sounds in it, LemonScent? There are several sounds that are normal for this EB setup including idle "dieseling", fuel injector ticking, and maybe a startup rattle for no more than 2-3 seconds. However, if you start hearing anything else like clatter from the belt side of the engine (timing chain stretched possibly), then start to worry. Using a high quality full synthetic can quiet down a lot of sounds if engine oil related.
