I've been using Mobile 1 since I got my '89 SHO. I'd been losing oil, now at one quart per 350 miles because of a front main seal leak. However, previous oil change I tried Valvoline MaxLife because it claimed it reduces oil usage. No change, still lost oil, gas mileage unaffected. On the advice of my mechanic I added a bottle of Lucas Oil Stop-Leak. Believe it or not my oil loss went to only one quart per 800 miles!

I'm now on my first gas tank of using Castrol's new full synthetic, Castrol Edge. First thing I noticed is the engine is noticeably quieter.

BTW Castrol Edge is a new blend that meets ILSAC GF-5. GF-5 specs are superior to the previous GF-4 (as in the obsoleted Castrol Syntec) in that is has better wear and seal protection.

I stay away from Royal Purple since I hear good things and then so really not so good things about it.

I've heard mixed options on R/P also. However, I've been using it in every vehicle I have owned for I can't even tell you how long.

I run Royal Purple 5w-30 High Performance Street and live in Northwestern Pennsyltucky.

You know, sub-arctic temps for 8 months, rain/snow for 3 and surface of the sun heat for the rest.

Pennzoil has a Platinum that is getting a lot of press lately - anyone have any experience with it? ......

Just found out my Ford dealer doesn't use Motorcraft (Phillips 66) oils but rather a private label oil. Called a friend who owns an oil distribution company, Chart Oil ( http://chartauto.com/) in St. Louis, and will be using the Penzoil Ultra Platinum synthetic. Two cases for under $9 per quart, just need to bring it to the dealer at change time.

Did the dealer tell you themselves or did you have to ask them? The general assumption is that if you go to a Ford dealer for an O/C on a Ford/Lincoln product, you get a Ford/Motorcraft part, not private label.

Asked them after a local Mustang owner suggested so.

I have always been a Mobile 1 user until recently, Royal Purple $36 for six quarts on Amazon hard to beat. Tried it in the Harley and Victory and the Victory shifted like the Harley. Went back to Mobile 1 in in the bikes. K&N oil filters 4-8 bucks on Amazon. I like the K&N's that have a nut welded to the end, easy to remove and replace.

I'm not quite sure what you are saying. Are you saying Royal Purple engine oil is better than Mobile 1?

I did Amsoil my last change, but am considering joining the Purple crowd. What's everyone feel comfortable with in terms of change interval? I know they say you can go a year between changes, which I would never do, but can you go 15k miles? Ford's own interval recommendation is 10k on their Motorcraft blend.

Yes and no, Royal Purple did not work well in my motorcycles, more engine noise on Harley and harder shifts on the victory. I noticed no difference in my vehicles 2006 Lincoln Mark LT 5.4, 1995 Firebird 5.7, 69 olds 5.7. I just received my 14 SHO and have not had an oil change yet.

Those that change the oil at 7,500 or even the one that did it at 18k, do you change the filter ever3-5k and top the oil off?

Maak, you cannot change the filter without changing the oil as the filter is one of the lowest points. I would suggest changing the filter only when changing the oil completely

I've considered jumping ship to Amsoil from Royal Purple, but have been using R/P for as long as I can remember.

I personally let mine go a MAX of 8,ooo miles, but usually change mine every 6,ooo. Reason being is that I don't drive much during the year. When I re-newed my registration this year, the SHO had clocked 7,*** miles and I'm not fond of using the same motor oil for 12 months.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know they moved the filter down which makes me think it is a canisiter type or just simply how they decided to do it on the sho's.

QS Ultimate Durability ($3.99/qt). 5w20 in fall and 5w30 in spring. Change every 6000 miles with a MC filter.

I went from Mobile 1 to Castrol Syntec and the engine seems a little quieter.
Has anyone noticed any kind of difference when changing oil other than price, like gas mileage, noise, performance, etc?
