Okay I finally got the valve covers off and checked them (thank you SHOPhoenix Project!). And I have to say it seems no oil is leaking out from the valve covers. Also the third bolt on the valve cover (closes to the fire wall) will not fully tighten. It gets somewhat tight, but I feel I am only going to round off the hole if I try to tighten it anymore. I drove it around and seemly it is not leaking from that point so I am going to leave it as it is.

The bad news is the car is still smoking. So whats my next move? I see reading from the forums here that cam seals and the crank sensor (as well as the oil too) are known points for oil to leak. I guess I should check these out as well?

Cam seals and front main seal are common leaks. If you can't get a good eye on the bottom of the cam sensor housing pull the sensor and see if there is oil present. Should be a how to in that section on this board or on shophoenix

If the valve cover bolt wont tighten it might be source of your leak. The threading might be stripped out. To not try and over do it I only use a 5mm hex key.

Yes that was what I was figuring. I used a 5mm hex socket not a key. I checked around the area after taking the car for a drive after getting everything together and it seems no oil is leaking from there.

I parked it after coming home and checked with a mirror. Smoke was still coming up from now what seems the front of the engine.

Anyway I'll try to get some video up so you can see what I am looking at.

Smoke from the front of the engine is usually cam seals leaking, but can also be due to a power steering leak or front main seal leak.

The socket is an easy way to strip out as you can over power the bolts.

Bryan,

Sounds like your on the right track to locate the leak. If you decide to repair the stripped valve-cover threads inthe head - hears a link to how I went about it using a time-cert. It starts on posting #272. Don't use helicoils - they won't hold.

Good luck.

Yep. I put anti-seize on the threads and tighten them in a 3 step process.

I am in the same boat. Only had to pay for registration and title transfer, but so far about 4k invested into her. It's getting to the point I am about to just pull the motor out and go with a complete rebuild.

How have you put 4k into it an it's still not reliable? I hope that's not the case for me XD It almost seems worthwhile to get an engine with a warranty such as the link below and just drop it in.

On the forum's faq it suggests it costs up to 1200 for the following. Is this realistic? Almost seems the low ($700) would only cover parts. Hmmm. Looks more like an $1500+

New spark plugs
New spark plug wires
New timing belt
New accessory belts
Valve lash adjustment
Intake gaskets
Cam cover gaskets
Spark plug well gaskets
Water pump
Crankshaft Position sensor
Camshaft Position sensor
Thermostat

I would add rod bearings and oil pan gaskets to the list.

It was in a car accident. That is way. the whole front was practically crushed. Most of the suspension was wrecked as well as all of the front steering. I have since replaced the subframe. All front wheel bearings, brakes, struts, control arms, tie rod ends, motor mounts, trans mount, tires and the strut tension rods (I believe this is what they are called). even the back has new struts, and brakes. pluse recently new valve covers, plugs and wires.
