i HAVE JUST COMPLETED A LONG AND HARD 1992 mtx ENGINE REBUILD. i CHECKED ALL CONNECTIONS, GET IN, NO START. ALL LIGHTS WORK AND ACCESORIES. WHEN I TURN THE KEY I GET A SLOW TURNING OF THE ENGINE, THE TACH GOES TO 500, AND A STRONG SMELL OF GAS. I CHECKED FOR SPARKS, I HAVE SPARK. I THOUGHT MAYBE BATTERY, IT'S FINE. I EVEN WENT OVER ALL GROUNDING POINTS. ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS. I SHOULD BE DOING 130 ON I-25 RIGHT NOW. IT HAS TO BE SOMETHING SIMPLE. BY THE WAY THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTIONS ON MY PREVIOUS POST DURING MY REBUILD.

u sure you got the firing order correct? Any chance you can get codes - or does it need to run for that.........

it won't throw a code for firing order being outta whack. confirm your firing order's right via a search here, then when you go to start it again, floor the gas pedal and have someone feed it some starting fluid. for some reason, every time i've ever let a SHO sit or changed an engine, it wants to flood out as soon as i try to start it.

Look at the battery. It may run your accessories A-OK, but when you put a real load on it, it craps out. You can take it out and have it load-tested.

Strong gas smell means that the fuel isn't igniting.

Double check:

- Firing order
- Coil Pack connector
- DIS connectors
- Ground Strap at rear of intake, pass side
- Crank pos sensor (CKP) connector
- Cam pos sensor (CID) connector
- Spark Plug gap 0.042 - 0.046in

*edit*
It could also mean you have a massive fuel leak. You should obviously make sure that this isn't the case before you give your ignition system the once over.

Don't hijack this guy's thread. You already have your own thread for your own issues.

its not hi-jacking, it's cross referencing to fix both our issues. can't we try to help each other out?

Now. I had an issue duriing the first start. I had to open the front head. My engine guy says that the vibration from the first rough start caused some of the cam cap bolts too loosen. I opened it and torqued them all again. 6 were loose. Put her back together, and she started, one try, still rough, no smoke though. i figured that after everything starts to work together she would mellow out. after 30 or 40 minutes of running, she started putttttinnng, and stalled. Won't start. I'm letting her rest for now. Have the battery on charge. Should I just keep trying like before? And, does anyone now why the car runs rough? It's like rattling, and it won't go above 650 rpms. But when you hit the gas gently she sounds good.

This morning I have been struggling just like other day of my first start, but no dice. just cranking. I just performed a KOEO TEST. ALL I get is 111-system ok, 512-asking if battery had been unplugged, which I did. I'm hearing the fuel pump, maybe it's the pressure. How can I do an accurate self test when the car won't start?

The car likes to rattle if it is idling that low because it is a very low engine speed. Mine does that if I pull a late shift off of a traffic light.

If you want to check pressure, get a pressure gauge from a O'Reily's or Autozone. They'll usually allow you to check it out for five bucks, or even free in some cases.

You mentioned that you are getting spark, but you haven't said if it was a good, strong spark. I'd double check all of the gaps, cables, boots and most definitely the firing order to make sure all of those are perfect.
