Hopefully this will fit in the General Discussion section.

Pat and I compromised and she agreed that we will take my SHO on our annual trek to Lincoln NE from Atlanta GA for our annual HobbyTown USA Convention, not her Mercury Mountaineer which she dearly loves.

I have had the SHO now for 8 months and only yesterday passed the 3,000 mile mark. Obviously time for the first service and certainly with respect to a 1,200 mile round trip.

Bear in mind here that I am 70 years old and although I will deny it to the fullest extent, I may suffer a little bit of memory loss. Not dementia, not alzhiemers, just a bit off once in a while.

So, I deliver the car to my local Ford dealer, not the one I leased the car from, at opening time and signed up for the usual 3,000 mile service.

Today, said dealer was resurfacing 3 of their 4 Service Lanes leaving only one open. I was first in line and four cars pulled in behind me. Turned off the motor and signed the work order and my brother took me off to our store.

Got to the store and unloaded the Fed Ex truck and was working on unpacking stuff when one of my employees said "You have a problem".

Bear in mind this was early in the morning, we do not open our store until 10:00 and my early show up employees usually do not answer the phone until around 9:30.

To cut down the story, this is the first time ever that I turned the car over to anyone other than Pat and I walked out with the Keyless Key Fob in my pocket.

Panic City at the Ford store, they do not have a "Universal" keyless code breaker thingie and my car was sitting at the front of their only service lane dead in the water. They finally sent a porter to my store to get the key fob thingie.

Sometimes, I wonder if all of this 21st Century technology is really going to work. I learned here that I do not have a spare, only a can of stop stuff and some sort of pump. I need to read the manual again to figure out what to do when the keyless key fob runs out of juice like my Smart Phone does just when I need it.

I will report in again after our roughly 1,600 mile road trip with the SHO

Perhaps I can improve on the 18 mpg I have gotten in 3,000 miles of almost entirely commuter driving so far.

The service writer is supposed to account for things like this, I would imagine.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that. I deal with the Service Manager who knows me from the Lightning days and is also a customer in our store.

He did say it was also his screw up for not asking for the key fob but he assumed that since I was someone that was in the business for 30 years I would have known to leave the key fob in the car.

Maybe it is kind of like when I ask Pat to "get in the mood" tomorrow and I forget to take the ****** pill.

That is really making a fool of oneself.

Thank you Sir:

I had to Google TMI as it was new to me.

I will try to be more discreet in the future.

Just to stay in the game and play with it.

If you ain't 70, you can't appreciate the ****** reference.

On the other hand, how many other 70 year olds are there on this Forum, or others, that have had the vehicles I have had in the last 10 years and now have and still can even think of ******.

Shoot, now I am challenged, maybe I will go for a tune, filter and exhaust.
I will stop buying ****** which I always forget to take and save the $30 per pill and invest it in go fast stuff.

Always keep your sense of humor, you will live longer.

Thanks Sean:

I think I needed that.

The thought of doing this 1,200 mile trip is daunting to say the least.

It will be our last of 18 such journeys as Pat and I are retiring on December 31st and turning the biz over to our Son Mike.

Sadly, this trip is a sort of "Do it as fast as you can and get it overwith" as far as the driving is concerned. After we are finally fully retired, we hope to do a trip by car to our "Home Country" of California where we lived until we were about 35 and visit relatives and friends. The Nebraska trip is a knuckle biter, how fast can we go without getting a ton of tickets.

I look forward to the Cali trip and I may set the Cruise Control on 65 instead of 85 and enjoy the scenery.

I can only wish the same on myself when I'm older too Bill. And you MUST keep a sense of humor until your dying day. ;) As for the key fob going dead on ya, there is a "base station" for it in the console part. Remove the coin holder and look in the corner. There is a box with a flap on it. Grab the tab and place the fob into it. It'll charge it and give ya enough juice to get the car started. Leave it in there for a bit but then you might want to look at getting some new batteries eventually. :)

Sean:

Lest I forget, where in Canada are you living???

Pat and I and our three kids lived in Queensborough, Ont. for two years, 1979-1980 when I worked for Vovo Canada as it was called in those days.

Pat and the kids still say it was the best tour we had between the US, Sweden, Peru and Canada.

Too bad I didn't continue paying into the Canadian Pension Scheme.

Hi ****:

Thanks for the tip and it is nice to hear from another Lightning owner.

This thread is getting a bit long in the tooth for a non technical topic and I don't want to waste a lot of band width on it but it is fun sometimes to talk about non "Deep Technical Subjects" that still have something to do with Ford enthusiasts every day lives.

I will report on our cross country trip with the SHO later in July, but I cannot help asking if you miss the Supercharger Whine that the Lightning has versus the more or less "Electric Motor" sound our SHO twin turbos have. Kind of boring for a vehicle that really has Primo Performance and is faster than our stock Lightnings.

I'm 60.

When I drive out to see my Dad in Sun City West, I do about 1,200 to Oklahoma City the first day, then the final 1,100+ miles to his place the 2nd day.

My trip to work is usually 500 miles to KY, but now that I'm down in VA, it's 575 miles one way.

I dunno, but 1,200 miles to me is a Sunday drive!!

Bill,
I can't wait to hear about your trip in your SHO. You'll be racking up the miles for sure but at least you'll be in comfort. I just put a bit over 500 miles on mine when I went to an SHO meet in NC a few weekends ago. In that near 100 degree weather, it was perfect.
And as for the whine from the L's supercharger, well, I still have the L and it won't be going anywhere for a long time. My ported Eaton sounded awesome I must say, but now my 3.4 Whipple on the L is actually is little quieter. That is, until you get down on 'er. With well over 700 ponies to the tires, which puts nearly 900 at the crank, it's not the "whine" I hear but the tires "screaming" for mercy. But then again, my lil 'ole '97 SHO now has a little Eaton on top of it and that makes me smile too. So I guess I'm lucky enough to have the best of all the "worlds" out there.

Bill it will be interesting to hear about your mpg on your trip.

We pulled an average 26 by the onboard computer readout on the last tank.

That was a pleasant surprise but in the 6 months I've put 17k on the meter.

My dad is 70 and has a monster miata with a 331 stroker Ford V8, I guess you never outgrow it, the toys just get more expensive.
