I heard a familiar sound today and took off the rear valve cover and found out both of my bolts for my cam chain tensioner were missing again. I found them both this time, but each of them had a spiral of the metal from the head around it.

This has never happened to me before as the bolt usually strips out and not the setting.

This happened on both bolts, so what do I need to do to get this fixed?

heli coil them in place. Just make sure when you drill them out that you get all and I mean all the metal fragments out, they're ******* bearings. Pretty easy job good luck on it.

Is there an easier solution? Such as just using JB weld? I don't think the torque rating on them is very high, so just wondering if that will hold in place.

Not to be a dick, but do it right or don't do it at all.

Helicoil is the way to go.

Well, it's alright.. I just don't own all the tools required to do the heli-coil.. namely a tap-and-die set.

They give you the tap in the set. the only thing you have to get is a drill bit and the size is stated on the Heli coil container.

I highly doubt that all the threads are gone. What is likely is that before the bolt came out entirely (after vibrating loose or whatever) it ripped out the last turn or so of the threads, which I consider insignificant. If you can reach the appropriate torque spec when reinstalling that bolt I'd just put it back in, granted if it strips out when going for traget torque then yes Helicoil is your only option. Obviously the appropriate torque spec was not attained the last time that tensioner was installed.

No, they were all gone.

It had a coil on the bolt around all the thread below the chain tensioner.

Anyways, heli-coil was very easy to install and it seems to be running good under the stress now.

Kind of a ***** to do the tapping since I couldn't get the t-bar in there, but I finally figured it out.
